Group stage
Venues |
In Group B, Chile met world champions Germany, Asia champions Australia and Africa champions Cameroon, who were the last to qualify for the tournament after the group draw. There had previously been five games against Australia, four of which were won and one game in the 1974 World Cup preliminary round ended in a draw. Against Germany there were three competitive defeats and two wins and two defeats in friendly games, the former in 1961 and 1968 in Chile. There was only one game against Cameroon that ended in a draw in the 1998 World Cup preliminary round. After a win against Cameroon and two draws against Germany and Australia, Chile reached the semi-finals in second place in the group. There they meet European champions Portugal. Both have met three times so far, of which the Chileans lost the first two in 1928 - the Chileans' first game outside South America - and 1972, and the last one ended in a draw in March 2011.
