Hernández started playing football at the Racing Club in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires . In 2005 he returned to his hometown, where he received his first professional contract with Atlético Tucumán in 2006 . In 2008 he moved to the neighboring country Uruguay to Racing Club de Montevideo and after a year to league competitor Defensor Sporting Club , who loaned him to the MLS club DC United in 2010 , where he was the only one of his professional positions to not have a league goal. In 2013 he went back to his native country to the Argentinos Juniors . In 2013 he moved to his grandmother's country of birth and played in Chile for the first time. With CD O'Higgins he won the Apertura of the 2013/14 season, where he scored the decisive goal for the 1-0 win against CD Universidad Católica in the final . After only one year in Chile, he left the American subcontinent to play in Europe for Celta Vigo in the Primera División . In his first season in Spain he just missed a place in a European club competition with Celta Vigo in ninth place. In the 2015/16 season , Vigo finished sixth and the club took part in a European competition again after ten years. In the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League , the team only failed in the semi-finals against eventual cup winners Manchester United . Hernández was voted Team of the Season by UEFA's Technical Study Group. The double burden took its toll, so that Celta only finished 13th in the 2016/17 season and thus clearly missed a place in a European competition.

Since his grandmother comes from Chile, he had the choice to play in the Chilean national team in addition to the Argentine team and he decided on Chile. In January 2014 he received an invitation from the Chilean national coach. He made his first international appearance on January 23, 2014 in a 4-0 win against Costa Rica and scored the second and third goals. For the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was indeed in a provisional 30-man squad called due to an injury he could be but then ultimately not taken into account and came only in October and November to two other missions, where he at 5: 0 against Venezuela in scored the last goal in stoppage time. In March 2015, he played another game in the friendly against Brazil , but was not considered for the 2015 Copa America in Chile. He was then part of the Chilean squad for the Copa América Centenario 2016 in the USA, where he played in two group matches and in the semifinals against Colombia . Chile was able to repeat last year's success in the penalty shoot-out in the final against Argentina, but that took place without him.

On May 19, Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi nominated him for a provisional squad of 17 players to represent Chile at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup . On June 2nd, he was also considered for the entire squad. He was used for the first time in the second group game against world champions Germany and played over 90 minutes. In the last group game against Australia, he was substituted on in the second half. In the goalless semi-final against European champions Portugal, he played over 116 minutes. After the goalless 120 minutes, goalkeeper Claudio Bravo secured a place in the final with three saved penalties. Here they met Germany again and Hernández played in the 1-0 defeat over 90 minutes. In the following World Cup qualifiers lost against Paraguay and Bolivia, he was only used against Bolivia.

At the Copa America 2019 he was only used in the three group games. His team could not defend the title, losing 3-0 to Peru in the semi-finals and 2-1 in the game for third place against Argentina.
