This article covers the Mexican national football team at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup . Mexico was the first host to win the home tournament in 1999 and was the only 2017 participant to have won the trophy before. The Mexicans took part in the Confederations Cup for the seventh time, setting the record for Brazilians who were not qualified this time. Mexico qualified by winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015 and winning a playoff against the USA, which won the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2013 . As in 2005, Mexico finished fourth after extra time.

Squad

Players marked with "*" also took part in the Confederation Cup in 2013 , Rafael Márquez even in 1999 and 2005. He is the only tournament participant who participated in 1999 and, along with Australian Tim Cahill, the only participant in the 2005 tournament in Germany participated. He is also the player with the most international appearances from the tournament participants , alongside the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo . At 38 years and 4 months, Márquez is also the oldest participant in the tournament.

On June 10th, Jesús Corona was replaced by Jürgen Damm .

preparation

In preparation, the Mexicans played against Croatia in Los Angeles on May 28 and lost 2-1. The Croatians used nine newcomers and no player with more than ten international matches. On June 3, they won 3-1 against Ireland in East Rutherford . They also had a World Cup qualifier against Honduras on June 9 , which they won 3-0 at the Aztec Stadium . Shortly before the tournament, there was the World Cup qualifier against the USA on June 12 , which also took place in the Aztec Stadium and ended 1: 1.

In Group A Mexico met host Russia, European champions Portugal and Oceania champions New Zealand. They had previously lost two games against Russia. There were two defeats and one draw in three games against Portugal. Against the New Zealanders there were five wins in six games and only one defeat in the first game in 1980. The Mexicans were able to qualify with a draw against Portugal and wins against Russia and New Zealand as group runners-up for the semi-finals, where they meet world champions Germany against That there have been ten games so far, one of which was won, five ended in a draw - one of which was lost on penalties - and four were lost normally.
