This article covers the Russian national football team at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup . Russia took part in the Confederations Cup for the first time and, as the host of the 2018 World Cup, was automatically qualified for this tournament.
Squad
Alexander Belenow , Roman Neustädter , Andrei Semjonow and Roman Sobnin were deleted from the provisional list. Artyom Dzjuba also dropped out due to an injury .
Since Roman Neustädter, who played in Turkey, was ultimately not taken into account, Russia was the only participating team that only featured players from the domestic league.

preparation
To prepare for the tournament, the Russians prepared near Innsbruck from May 25th to June 3rd and then traveled to Budapest , where they beat Hungary 3-0 on June 5th . Immediately afterwards they traveled back to Moscow and played there for the first time on June 9th against Confederate Cup participants Chile . The game ended 1-1.

In Group A, Russia met European champions Portugal, the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup winner Mexico and Oceania champions New Zealand. There were two wins, one draw and three defeats in six games against Portugal. They had previously won two games against Mexico. The Russians had never played against the New Zealanders before the tournament, but there was a game in the Soviet Union's 1982 preliminary round against New Zealand that was won 3-0.
