In Group A, New Zealand met European champions Portugal, the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup winner Mexico and hosts Russia. The New Zealanders have never played against Portugal and Russia, but there was a game in the preliminary round of the 1982 World Cup against the Soviet Union, which was lost 3-0. Against Mexico there was one victory in six games - in the first game in 1980 - and five defeats, two of which in the intercontinental playoffs of the 2014 World Cup qualification.

The New Zealanders were the only team to lose all group matches and were eliminated as the bottom group.
