Michael Joseph Boxall (born August 18, 1988 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand football player .
Player career
Beginning in New Zealand
Boxall attended Mount Albert Grammar School in Auckland and played for the local school team. He was able to win the league together with the team in 2004 and 2005 and even win the national championship in 2005. In 2006 he became the captain of the school team.
He then played for a number of New Zealand teams. These included Central United , Ellerslie AFC and Auckland City FC . With Central United he was able to win the Northern League in 2007 and with Auckland City he was champion in the New Zealand Football Championship . In 2006 and 2007 each year the award was made for the best young player in New Zealand.
College in the usa
In 2007 he went to the United States to play for the college soccer team at the University of California in Santa Barbara, California . In his first season for the gauchos, he played twelve games. Together with the Englishman Andy Iro he formed a safe defense. Due to a knee injury, he was out halfway through the season.
The move to the MLS
In the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft, Boxall was drafted as the first pick by the Vancouver Whitecaps . He signed with the Canadians on March 17, 2011 and made his debut for the Major League Soccer franchise on March 19 .
He returned to New Zealand in mid-2012 and signed a two-year contract with A-League club Wellington Phoenix .
National team
Boxall played for various New Zealand youth national teams. He made his national debut with the country's U-20 team , where he made 14 international matches in two years. During this time he was part of the 2007 OFC U-20 Championship and the 2007 U-20 World Cup .
From 2007 to 2008, he was part of New Zealand's U-23 who qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He was part of the team in both the qualifying games and the Olympics. In 2006 he played for a New Zealand special selection at the Vietnam Football Federation Cup.
On March 25, 2011, he made his debut for the New Zealand national soccer team in a friendly against China.
