The Newcastle United Jets FC is an association founded in 2000, Australian football club from the city of Newcastle , north of Sydney . The Jets belonged to the Australian first division, the A-League , from 2005 to 2012 and played their home games at the Hunter Stadium at that time . In 2008 the Jets became Australian champions.

history

The club was originally known as "Newcastle United", but the nickname "Jets" was added to the name to avoid confusion with the English Premier League club Newcastle United .

The name "Jets" is an allusion to the base of the Australian Air Force in Williamstown , about 20 kilometers north of Newcastle. The club logo shows three F / A-18 Hornets from the Royal Australian Air Force .

Newcastle United was founded in 2000 as the successor to the Newcastle Breakers . This club was dissolved when the Australian Football Association canceled the NSL license after the 1999/00 season.

At the end of the 2011/12 season, on April 10, 2012, the Hunter Sports Group announced that it would no longer participate in the game as jets in the coming season due to losses of $ 27 million and lost trust in the national association , the FFA and return the license. For the time being, the FFA insists on the HSG's commitment to field a team for the competition by 2020.

The jet fan base is known as "The Squadron".
