Dimitrios "Dimitri" Petratos (born November 10, 1992 in Sydney ) is an Australian-Greek soccer player .

Career

Adolescence

Petratos comes from a soccer family, his father Evangelos was active in the National Soccer League and both played together in the years 2009 and 2010 at Penrith Nepean United and Sydney Olympic in the NSW Premier League . Petratos attended the prestigious Westfields Sports High School and was sponsored by the Johnny Warren Football Foundation during his youth. In 2007 and 2008 he also received a scholarship at the NSW Institute of Sport .

Professional at Sydney FC

After playing for the youth team of Sydney FC in the National Youth League in the 2009/10 season , he was part of the youth team again in the following season. Due to several injury-related failures in the professional team Petratos came on November 7, 2010 against the Newcastle United Jets to his debut in the A-League . In the following weeks, the offensive player was used regularly and finally signed a professional contract for two years in January 2011 after he had been able to fight for a regular place in the team shortly before.

Valued by coach Vítězslav Lavička for his versatility, he made a name for himself until the end of the season with a spectacular goal against Gold Coast United and a brace against the Central Coast Mariners . Sydney finished the season as the reigning champions in ninth place in the table and Petratos was highlighted as one of the few positive appearances. In the following season 2011/12 Petratos had problems to come, the forward position was mostly occupied by Mark Bridge or Bruno Cazarine , the attacking midfield positions filled Terry Antonis and Nick Carle . In one of his few appearances from the start he scored against Brisbane Roar after just 36 seconds and played a decisive role in the 2-0 success when Brisbane went as a loser again for the first time after 36 league games.

During the 2012/13 season there were upheavals between Petratos and Sydney. After he was initially no longer included in the professional squad under the new coach Ian Crook and was only used for the youth team, his advisor publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the current situation and requested a transfer clearance. A move to the newly founded A-League club Western Sydney Wanderers had previously failed in May 2012 . There was also an argument during a training session between Petratos and goalkeeping coach Zeljko Kalac , which was also publicized. At the end of 2012, the club and the players finally agreed to terminate the contract early.

Detour to Malaysia

In December 2012 Petratos signed a one-year contract with the Malaysian first division club Kelantan FA . Since the Malaysian league only allows two foreigners per team, and Kelantan's coach Bojan Hodak preferred Nigerian defender Obinna Nwaneri and Guinean striker Keita Mandjou , Petratos could only play in the 2013 AFC Cup . Since he had no prospect of missions at the start of the season in January, he spent some time training at the English club Blackburn Rovers on the mediation of the club president . At the end of February he was ordered back by Kelantan for the group games of the AFC Cup and subsequently scored four goals when the club qualified as first in the table for the knockout phase.

For his last competitive game for Kelantan Petratos came in May 2013 in the round of 16 of the AFC Cup, when they were eliminated from the competition by a 0-2 home defeat against Kitchee SC . In April he missed the league squad again because coach Hodak Dickson Nwakaeme preferred to Petratos to replace Mandjou. A decision that met with incomprehension among the team's fans.

Return to Australia

In June 2013, the Australian professional club Brisbane Roar announced the signing of Petratos.

National team

Petratos, who already played for the Australian U-17s , took part in the 2010 AFF U-19 championship with the Australian U-20s and scored a goal against South Korea during the tournament, which Australia finished as the winner. A little later, he was also part of the squad for the 2010 U-19 Asian Cup , when Australia only lost 3-2 to the young players from North Korea in the final. Due to the success, the Australian U-20 was eligible to participate in the U-20 World Cup in Colombia the following year . Petratos was used in all three group matches, but Australia only won one point and failed in the preliminary round

In qualifying for the 2012 Olympic football tournament , Petratos was used several times by Aurelio Vidmar in the U-23 selection . Australia remained in all six games of the decisive qualifying phase without their own goal and missed the final round while lying on the bottom of the table. He was also in the squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Australia was eliminated in the preliminary round after two defeats against France and Peru and a draw against Denmark . Petratos remained without commitment.
