Obinna Nwaneri (born March 18, 1982 in Lagos ) is a Nigerian soccer player who currently plays for Kelantan FA in Malaysia . The name "Obinna" means father's heart in Igbo . He plays as a central defender and his strengths include speed, control and timing.
Career
He began his career with the Nigerian club Julius Berger FC and then with Enyimba FC . In January 2007 he moved to the Swiss club FC Sion . In 2008 Trabzonspor also showed interest in him, but he stayed with FC Sion for the time being to move to Kazma SC in Kuwait after the end of the 2009/10 season . In January 2012 he moved to Kelantan FA after three months without a club .
Career ladder
- 2000: His talent was discovered at the Nigerian club Julius Berger FC and was drafted into the professional team. He also went a long way in helping his club win the Nigerian Premier League .
- 2001: After a successful season, he was declared one of the best defensive players in the league. They could not defend their title this season and were even thrown out of the cup.
- 2002: He won the Nigerian Cup with a 3-0 win over the Lobi Stars .
- 2003: He moved to the Nigerian top club FC Enyimba and formed a dream duo with Romanus Orjinta . They defended the Nigerian Premier League for the third time in a row and even won the CAF Super Cup .
- 2004: He became the captain of FC Enyimba FC and won the CAF Champions League against Étoile Sportive du Sahel from Tunisia on penalties 5-3. He even shot the decisive fifth penalty. But that year they did not win the Nigerian Premier League . The Orlando Pirates negotiated with Obinna and his club. But the transfer failed because they couldn't agree on a transfer fee.
- 2004-2005: Obinna moved in January 2005 to the Tunisian club Espérance Tunis .
- 2005-2006: He was nominated for the Nigerian national soccer team for the 2006 African Cup of Nations.
- 2006–2007: In January 2007 he signed a contract with FC Sion
- 2008: The Turkish club Trabzonspor showed interest in him, but he stayed with FC Sion .
- 2012: After Nwaneri was without a club for almost three months, he signed a contract with the Malaysian club Kelantan FA .
