The club was founded in 1981 as an association of the government of the Benue state . Until 1986 the class affiliation is unknown. From 1991 to 1995 the club was second class and then relegated. In 1996 one belonged to the third division, where in 1997 the promotion to the second division took place. There they made the march and rose in 1998 to the first division. In the first first division season the Lobi Stars surprised and collected 52 points. This reached fourth place and qualified for the final round. A 3-0 win against the Wikki Tourists and a draw against Iwuanyanwu Nationale and Plateau United were enough to win the championship. This qualified for the first time in the 2000 season for the CAF Champions League . However, it was already over after the preliminary round. In the league, the club again reached the final four round, but had to admit defeat in two of three games. You could only win against Plateau United, which meant third place. In 2001 they were disappointed when they were four points short of qualifying. In 2002 and 2003 it was only twelfth. However, in 2003 the Lobi Stars reached the final of the FA Cup . This could win the team. With goals from Olewesi Johnson and Nkonye Daniel , the club was able to defeat the Port Harcourt Sharks 2-0 on October 25, 2003 . Three months later, in the game for the Super Cup, the team only failed on penalties with 5-3 against Enyimba FC . For the 2007 season, the Lobi Stars improved again to seventh place. However, it was twelve points behind master Port Harcourt Dolphin . Although they scored three points more in the following year, only ninth place could be booked. In 2006, when the championship mode was changed, the club was in Group B on the hunt for points. Although they only lost six games, they also drew six times. It was the eighth place that the team achieved, one place before relegation. Only because of the better goal difference did the team keep the class. In 2007 there was hope for a championship victory. But with a 1-0 defeat on the last day of the group stage against Zamfara United , they missed the qualifying round. Even a draw would have been enough. However, points were subsequently withdrawn from the game against the Port Harcourt Dolphins. In 2007 the mode was changed again and adapted to European standards. The league was now played from September 2007 to May 2008. The Lobi Stars finished in seventh place. After the 2008/09 season, the club narrowly avoided relegation. With 49 points, the Lobi Stars had only one more than the first relegated Akwa United .

In August 2009 it became known that the association wanted to move into private hands. The government of the Benue state is therefore giving up the club for the next three years, if an interested party can be found. Richard Edewor , who wants to sign the necessary written documents by September 1st, is considered a candidate .
