The association was founded on October 15, 1970. After the introduction of the professional league, he initially played mainly in the Nigerian Amateur League , the second division in Nigeria.

In the 1996 second division season, the club qualified for the Premier League. But in 1997 the season in the Nigerian House of Lords was more than disappointing. With seventeen defeats you had three more than victories. Ultimately, only rank 17 was reached, which was equivalent to relegation. The descent was particularly annoying, as you could have climbed to eighth place with just one more win. Between 1998 and 2001 the team was again active in the country's second division. Nevertheless, the club also set accents in Nigerian football from there. As early as 1999, the club attracted attention in the cup and reached third place. As a second division team at the time, the 2000 team was an even bigger surprise in the competition for the Nigerian FA Cup . They prevailed in the knockout rounds and the team reached the final on October 7, 2000. In the encounter against the Enugu Rangers , the Tornadoes prevailed 1-0 with a goal from Akin Ademofe . This is the greatest success in the club's history to date. In the game for the Super Cup on February 18, 2001 against Julius Berger they had to admit defeat 1: 2.

In 2002 the Niger Tornadoes rose from the Nigerian Amateur League to the Premier League. In the first year after promotion, it was enough for ninth place, a good midfield rank.

47 points in the 2004 season were almost too few and relegation was very close this season. The team only had one plus point on the first relegated Wikki Tourists . However, the team secured relegation on the penultimate match day, as they could win 2-0 against Wikki in a direct comparison. The 2005 season was also very close. The Tornadoes found themselves early in the table cellar due to four winless games at the beginning of the season. In the end, fifty points were enough to keep the league. There was only a point difference of five points between places 16 and 7. In 2006 the team failed to qualify for the final round. Although they had only one defeat more than leaders Nasarawa United FC , it was only enough to place six in Group B. In Group A of the 2007 season, the club barely missed the relegation relegation places. Of ten teams in the group, the Tornadoes only reached eighth place, with ninth place already leading to relegation. However, with a difference of five points, the cushion was big enough. In the 2007/08 season, the team was fifth. They were only four points behind Master Kano Pillars FC . In the following season, the club was again fifth. A total of 14 points were missing from first place this time. With eleven draws, they had only one less than league rival Enugu Rangers . Against eventual champions Bayelsa United , they lost 4-0 on the first day of the match. In the second leg, the team retained the upper hand 3-0.
