The Nigeria Professional Football League , formerly also the Nigeria Premier League , is the top division for football in Nigeria .

history

The competition, which was first played in 1972 under the name Premier League, is organized by the Nigeria Football Association . After various changes to the mode, 20 teams are currently playing for the championship title. The second highest division is the two-part division 1. Since 1990, gaming has been professionalized.

The league has had a main sponsor since 2002 and is officially called Globacom Premier League . After the 2006 season, the game plan was aligned with the European leagues. So the games are moving closer together, starting in August and going through May.

  • 1990: Sixteen teams played from 1990 onwards without having to qualify for a final round.
