Uyo is a large city in southeast Nigeria . The capital of the state of Akwa Ibom , which is best known for its large oil production , is located about 500 kilometers south of the state capital Abuja near the west bank of the Cross River . At the official 2006 census , Uyo had 436,606 inhabitants. 554,906 people live in the Uyo metropolitan area , which is 168 square kilometers in size. The population has increased significantly in the past ten years due to the massive growth in infrastructure in the region.
history
After the restructuring of Nigeria in 1987 and the newly introduced federal states, Uyo became the capital of Akwa Ibom state. In the state of Cross River , which previously existed on the area , Uyo had only played a subordinate role.
On December 10, 2016 , the half-finished Reigners Bible Church collapsed during a service , killing over 200 people.
Institutions
The University of Uyo, founded in 1991, is located in the city . The Uyo diocese , which was established in 1989 by Pope John Paul II, also has its headquarters in Uyo .
traffic
Uyo International Airport is located about 20 kilometers southeast of the city . In order to relieve the increasing traffic in Uyo, many roads have been expanded in recent years, including now eight-lane motorways .
