Akure is the capital of the Nigerian state of Ondo and is located in the southwest of Nigeria. According to a calculation from 2012, the city has 941,410 inhabitants.
history
Inscriptions found on rocks near Akure date from the Mesolithic . In the same area in the Iwo Eleru cave, a skeleton of Homo sapiens , at least 11,000 years old, was found, the oldest remnant of a human from West Africa . Akure was a Yoruba city-state until 1800 when it was conquered by a neighboring city. The city is growing rapidly; at the last census in 1991 it still had 239,124 inhabitants.
Economy and Infrastructure
Agricultural and forestry products from Akure are palm oil , cocoa , cassava and tropical woods. The Akure Airport and a highway connecting Akure to Ibadan and Lagos .
Akure is the seat of the Federal University of Technology, founded in 1981, and several radio and television stations, including the Ondo State Television Corporation (ODTV). Akure has a stadium with a capacity of 15,000, which is home to the Sunshine Football Club in the second division football.
