history
Since the 11th century, Katsina has been surrounded by a 21 km long wall with seven gates, of which only a few remains have remained. In the 14th century, the city became a center for Islamic schools and, like other northern cities, a hub for the caravan trade. At the end of the 16th century, Katsina replaced Timbuktu as the capital of Islam in West Africa and became a destination for immigrants and students of Islam. Starting from Katsina, the house state Katsina emerged until it was conquered in 1804 by the Sokoto caliphate under Usman dan Fodio . In 1922 a university was established and attended by many eminent figures, including several prime ministers. The center of northern Nigeria, however, moved more and more to Kaduna , so that the location of the university was also moved there in 1938.
