Lafia is the capital of the Nigerian state of Nassarawa and is located in central Nigeria. According to an estimate from 2007, it has 134,185 inhabitants.

Lafia, formerly known as Lafia-Bere-Bere , was the center of a city-state that belonged to the house states in the 19th century . It was visited by German Africa explorer Robert Flegel in 1882 and had about 15,000 inhabitants at that time. Under Mohamman Agwe , who ruled from 1881 to 1903, the Lafia market developed into one of the most important in the Benuetal with a trade route to Loko, 90 km to the south-west . Today Lafia is connected to Port Harcourt by a narrow-gauge railway . The city has a football club, Nasarawa United, in the first division.

Lafia and its surroundings form one of the 13 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state of Nassarawa with an area of ​​2756.44 km². In the penultimate census in 1991, the LGA had 240,656 inhabitants and thus a population density of 87 inhabitants per km². In the city itself there were 79,387 inhabitants.
