Rupert Julian

Rupert Julian (* 25. January 1879 in Whangaroa , New Zealand ; † 27. December 1943 in Hollywood , actually: Thomas Percival Hayes ) was a US -American film director , actor , screenwriter and producer of New Zealand origin.

Life

The already experienced stage actor left his New Zealand homeland in 1913 and emigrated to the USA, where he immediately received roles in numerous smaller films. In 1914 he played the role of "Antonio" in Lois Weber's adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice , the first feature film in film history to be directed by a woman. Rupert Julian also made his first films as a director himself from 1914.

His greatest success up to that point was in 1918 as director, producer, author and actor of the propaganda flick The Kaiser, the Beast of Berlin , in which Rupert Julian in the title role of the German Emperor Wilhelm II. The image of the last German monarch in the eyes of the had a lasting impact on the American public. There are no more copies of this financially extremely successful film known; it is on the American Film Institute's list of ten most wanted films .

In 1923 Rupert Julian took over the direction of the film Merry-Go-Round while filming was in progress , after Erich von Stroheim had been dismissed by studio boss Irving Thalberg . In 1925 Julian made his most famous film today: The Phantom of the Opera . However, he fell out while filming with lead actor Lon Chaney and did not complete the film, of which several versions were later made, himself.

After that, Rupert Julian could no longer build on his earlier successes. In 1926 he was once again the "Kaiser Wilhelm" in the spy film Three Faces East, which he directed himself . In the same year he had the most critical success with the drama Silence . He ended his career in 1930 with his first two sound films: The romance Love Comes Along and the horror film The Cat Creeps . Then he retired from the film business for health reasons. He died on December 27, 1943 of complications from a stroke .
