Makurdi is the capital of the Nigerian state of Benue . According to an estimate from 2006, it has 306,108 inhabitants. Makurdi is the location of the Benue State University and the Federal University of Agriculture and the military airfield Makurdi Air Force Base .

geography

Makurdi lies at an average height of 104 m on both sides of the Benue river , about 100 km southeast of Abuja . The 323 km long road to Abuja leads through Lafia . A railway bridge over the Benue, built in 1932, is a connection point between northeastern Nigeria and the sea. A second bridge was built in 1978. A pipeline from Port Harcourt to Yola runs past Makurdi .

history

Makurdi was founded in the 1920s and became the capital of the ten Benuestaaten in 1927. Makurdi has been the capital of the state of Benue since February 3, 1976.

In December 2000, three police officers killed two members of an illegal association and were sentenced to death for it. In April 2002 it became known that rockets and grenade launchers had been stored next to a church in Makurdi since the 1970s .
