Erchinoald

Erchinoald (* unknown; † 658 ) was a Franconian house meier in Neustria .

Little is known about Erchinoald's early years. Only a relationship with Berthetrude , the mother of the Merovingian king Dagobert I , and rich land holdings east of the Seine are considered certain. In 641 Nanthild , Dagobert's widow , appointed him as Aega's successor in the office of the Neustrian house merchant. Thus he led the business for Clovis II and his wife Balthild , who had lived as a slave at the court of Erchinoald before her marriage to Clovis. Already 642 he concluded with the Burgundian house Meier Flaochad an alliance in which they each were confirmed in office. Later, after Flachoad's death, he was also his successor in Burgundy. In the same year he moved with troops against the aristocrat Willebad, which is the last entry in the chronicle of the so-called Fredegar . Nothing further is known about him until his death in 658. His successor in the office of the neustrian house-keeper was Ebroin .

He was married to Leutsinde and had at least one son Leudesius , who in 675 became a houseman himself. Whether Aemma , who later became Eadbald's wife of Kent Erchinoald's daughter, is a matter of dispute. Chlothar II. Or Theudebert II. Also come into consideration as possible fathers of Aemmas.

Together with the king, Erchinoald founded two Colombian- style monasteries in Péronne on the Somme and in Lagny-sur-Marne , and made generous donations for the monastery of Fontenelle .
