Garba Lawal (born May 22, 1974 in Kabuna ) is a former Nigerian soccer player who played in midfield and took part in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . He is currently the managing director of Kaduna United FC .
Career
In the club
Lawal began his career with Julius Berger in Nigeria. In 1995 he moved to Espérance Tunis. After one season he moved to the Dutch Eredivisie to Roda JC Kerkrade where he had his most successful time. He played in Kerkrade for six seasons and won the KNVB Cup twice. For the 2002/03 season he moved to Levski Sofia in the Bulgarian league and was able to win the Bulgarian Cup. He gave a very short stint in the USA with Columbus Crew and then moved to Sweden to Elfsborg . In the 2005/06 season he moved to Santa Clara in Portugal . After only half a year he moved from Portugal to Iraklis Thessaloniki and after only 3 months to his original club Julius Berger in Nigeria. For the 2007/08 season he tried his luck in China and signed a contract with Changsha Ginde .
For the 2008/09 season he was finally drawn back home. He stayed with Julius Berger until 2012 and ended his career with Lobi Stars .
In the national team
Lawal took part in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He was in the national team's squad four times at the Africa Cup in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006, and also took part in the 1998 World Cup in France .
As a trainer
In August 2009 he was introduced as an assistant coach for Lobi Stars FC. In the same year he was hired as a team coordinator for the Nigerian U-17 national soccer team .
