Nicholas "Nick" Carle (born November 23, 1981 in Sydney ) is an Australian football player of Uruguayan - Chilean descent.

Carle was voted the best player in the A-League in 2007 and then set out for a career in Europe. His older brother Leo Carle is also a footballer.

Club career

Carle was already at the age of 15 for Sydney Olympic in the top Australian league, the National Soccer League (NSL). By early 2002, the midfielder made 86 appearances for Sydney before making the leap to Europe. He signed a contract with the French first division club ES Troyes AC and came in the second half of the 2001/02 season to five missions. In the following season Carle played only in the club's reserve team and left Troyes at the end of the season. He returned to Australia and joined the Marconi Stallions , for which he also played in the New South Wales Premier League after the collapse of the NSL in summer 2004 .

With the establishment of the Australian professional league A-League , he signed a contract with Newcastle United Jets . He qualified in both years at Newcastle for the championship finals, but did not make it to the final. In the 2006/07 season Carle was voted best player by the players of the A-League and awarded the Johnny Warren Medal . As a result, he had several offers from Turkey and finally moved to Gençlerbirliği Ankara for around AU $ 650,000 . Half a year later he signed with the English second division club Bristol City . There, the technically skilled midfield engine quickly established itself as a regular player and narrowly missed promotion to the Premier League . During the summer break, league rival Crystal Palace signed him for a million pounds.

After four years in Europe, Carle is returning to his homeland in Australia to join Australia's first division club Sydney FC .

National team

Carle played with the Australian U-17 selection at the Oceanic qualifying tournament for the U-17 World Cup in 1997 , where they failed in the final against the New Zealand team with 0: 1 and thus missed the final. In 2001 he played with the U-20s at the Junior World Cup in Argentina and made it to the round of 16 there. For the Australian Olympic selection Carle was regularly used between 1998 and 2004, but was not called into the squad for the Olympic tournament in 2000 or 2004.

He made his first appearance in the Australian senior team at the beginning of 2004 against Venezuela, but was not considered for a few years afterwards. It was only his performance in the A-League in 2007 that brought him a few more appointments. Carle was part of Australia's 30-strong provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but did not make it into the final 23-player squad.
