Damian Mori (born September 30, 1970 in Melbourne , Victoria , Australia ) is a former Australian soccer player . He established himself as a fast-paced penalty area hunter, which is remarkable for a player who started his career as a defender. He left his mark both at home and internationally. For Australia he completed 45 international matches and scored 29 goals, making him the sole record scorer for the Socceroos until November 19, 2013 .

Club career

Mori was also successful at the club level - mainly in the National Soccer League . After he became the most important and best player in Adelaide City , he spent a single season (1996/97) overseas, in Germany with Borussia Mönchengladbach . This move was marked by frustration. He appeared in only six games and never played more than one half. In those six games he didn't score a single time. Mori returned home and became NSL's top scorer the next year.

In 1996, Mori held the world record for fastest goal after scoring for City in just 3.69 seconds in a 2-2 draw with Sydney United .

In 2000 Mori moved to Perth Glory and enjoyed great success. Sturm's partnership with Bobby Despotovski was seen as one of the championship's most effective. Mori won the NSL championship in 2002/03 and scored in the grand final. He was also part of the 2003-04 Perth Glory championship team.

After the National Soccer League ended in 2004, he moved back to Adelaide City to play and coach in the South Australian Premier League. There he was extremely successful and won the "Trainer of the Year" award. Nonetheless, many were surprised by the fact that the NSL's record scorer of all time was not on the shortlist of clubs in the A-League .

It later turned out that a major obstacle was Mori's desire for a part-time contract that would allow him to do business in Adelaide . Ahead of the fourth round of the A-League season, it was announced that Perth had signed Glory Mori on a short-term contract to replace injured defender David Tarka . Then Mori came as a substitute in Glory's 1-0 away win at the New Zealand Knights on September 22, 2005 on the field. After some excellent performances, e.g. B. a double hit against the Newcastle United Jets and a hat trick against Adelaide United , the club wanted a long-term contract. After a few arguments with Adelaide City President Bob D'Ottavi, Mori agreed to a one-year deal.

On December 9, 2005 it was announced that Damian Mori had been named as assistant director at Perth Glory . This appointment followed Alan Vest's promotion to manager following the departure of Steve McMahon . After the end of the 2005-06 A League season, Mori returned to Adelaide City as a player and manager . On September 27, 2006, Mori signed a short-term contract with the Central Coast Mariners to cover the once-prolonged loss of Nik Mrdja . After the short-term contract with the Mariners expired, the FFA did not allow the Mariners to sign him again. On November 21, 2006, the new manager approached Queensland Roar , Frank Farina , and a day later, he signed a short-term contract "by the end of the season."

International career

Mori made his first international match on September 4, 1992 against the Solomon Islands . Within the next decade he should appear for Australia a total of 45 times and score 29 goals, which is a record to date. The greatest success was the surprising second place in the 1997 Confederations Cup tournament in Saudi Arabia.

On November 19, 2013, Tim Cahill set his record of 29 international goals in a 1-0 win against Costa Rica. Since March 5, 2014, Cahill has been the sole Australian top scorer after scoring two goals in a 3: 4 against Ecuador .
