Paulo Díaz , full name Paulo César Díaz Huincales (born August 25, 1994 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean football player . The defender has been under contract with the Argentine first division team River Plate since 2019 . Since 2015 he has been active for the Chilean national team , for which his father Ítalo Díaz played two games 14 years earlier.

Career

societies

In his youth Díaz played for three different clubs in Chile. He then received his first professional contract with the capital club CD Palestino . After finishing second in the 2013/14 Clausura, fourth place was taken in the Apertura league round in the 2014/15 season and Palestino was thus qualified for the Apertura Liguilla. Palestino finished this with two final wins as champions, with which the team qualified for the 2015 Copa Libertadores qualification. In this, the team prevailed due to the away goals rule against Nacional Montevideo , but then dropped out after the group stage, in which he was used in all six games. In the Clausura, the team then paid tribute for the double burden and only finished 19th. On July 1, 2015, he moved to local rivals CSD Colo-Colo , for whom he only came to a two-minute assignment. At the end of January 2016, he then moved across the Andes to the Argentine Supercopa winner San Lorenzo . In 2018 a guest appearance in Saudi Arabia at al-Ahli followed and in 2019 back to Argentina for River Plate .

National team

He made his first appearance for the Chilean national team on January 29, 2015 against the USA , when he came on in the 79th minute. For the Copa América 2015 in his native Chile, he was just as neglected as the Copa América Centenario 2016 , which Chile won on penalties against Argentina . It was not until January 2017 that he came back to two appearances at a tournament in China, to which Chile came without most of the regular players. On March 29, 2017, he had his first competitive game in the 3-1 World Cup qualifier against Venezuela , where he came on a minute before the end of regular time and received a yellow card two minutes later .

On May 19, Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi nominated him for a provisional squad of 17 players to represent Chile at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup . On June 2nd, he was considered the youngest player for the full squad . He was substituted on for the first time in the second group game against world champions Germany in the 71st minute. In the last group game against Australia, he played over 90 minutes, but then he was no longer used. In the following World Cup qualifiers lost against Paraguay and Bolivia, he was only used against Bolivia. The Chileans ultimately missed the World Cup with a 3-0 defeat on the last day of the match against record world champions Brazil.

At the Copa América 2019 , he was used in two group games and in the game for third place, which was lost 2-1 to Argentina. His team lost their chance of defending their title through a 3-0 defeat in the semi-finals against Peru.
