Diego Nicolás De La Cruz Arcosa (born June 1, 1997 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan football player .

Career

The 1.67 meter tall midfielder De La Cruz is the maternal half-brother of football player Carlos Sánchez . He started playing football in the so-called Baby fútbol near Coami, a club from his barrio . He later joined Liverpool Montevideo at the age of 12 and was part of the Septima División team there in 2011. The following year he was active in the Sexta División. In 2013 he was a member of the U16, in 2014 he played for the team in the Quinta División. Then in 2015 he first went through the team of the Cuarta División and the reserve (Formativas) competing in the Tercera División and was finally promoted to the professional team of the first division. With the U19 he was Uruguayan champion in the Cuarta División in 2015. This resulted in qualification for the Copa Libertadores U20 2016 . He made his debut in the Primera División in the Apertura 2015 on September 13, 2015 in a 1-0 away win against El Tanque Sisley , when he was called into the starting line-up by coach Juan Verzeri . In the 2015/16 season, he played 17 first division matches (one goal). He was also used in five games of the U20 Copa Libertadores in 2016 and scored four goals. The team finished the competition in second place after losing 1-0 in the final against São Paulo FC . During the first division season in 2016, he was used eleven times (four goals) in the league. This was followed by three goals in seven league appearances in the 2017 season and one game (no goal) in the 2017 Copa Sudamericana . In August 2017, the Argentine club River Plate signed him , which paid a transfer fee of 3.5 million US dollars for 25 percent of the transfer rights. He signed a contract that ran until June 2021.

National team

De La Cruz has received appointments in Uruguay's U17 selection . He had been part of the Uruguayan U18 national team under coach Alejandro Garay since April 2015 at the latest and took part in the international U18 tournament Suwon JS 2015 in South Korea in May 2015 . In the 2-1 win against France, he was in the starting line-up on May 1, 2015. He was also nominated for the U18 tournament in July 2015 in Los Angeles . Uruguay won the competition. De La Cruz played in the games against the USA and the Czech Republic. Further U18 appearances date from July 13, 2015 in a friendly against Xolos de Tijuana and from October 12, 2015 against Russia.
