Ricardo Elvio Pavoni Cúneo , also known as Elbio Ricardo Pavoni , (born July 8, 1943 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player and current coach. He played in his career for Defensor and Independiente Avellaneda as well as for the Uruguayan national soccer team .

Career

Club career

Ricardo Pavoni's first stop in football was the Uruguayan capital city club Defensor . Here he played from 1960 to 1964 without much success, the balance of power in Uruguayan football was already in the sixties in favor of Peñarol and Nacional Montevideo . In 1964 Pavoni was signed by the Argentine top club CA Independiente to replace his compatriot Tomás Rolan , as he was seriously injured. Ricardo Pavoni immediately secured his regular seat and did not give it up again until he left the Estadio Libertadores de América in 1976 . From 1965 to 1976 Pavoni had won twelve important titles with Independiente across all competitions and completed 423 league games in the Primera División with 57 goals. The midfielder was Argentine champion three times, for the first time in the Nacional competition in 1967 when they came first with two points ahead of Estudiantes de La Plata . Almost three years later, in 1970, won the Metropolitano, the second championship title for Pavoni with Independiente. This time they were tied for first place with CA River Plate after all match days , only the better goal difference decided the championship for Independiente. Exactly a year later, again in the Metropolitano, they won the league for the third time when the first place, one point ahead of CA Vélez Sársfield , was occupied.

Due to its success on a national level, CA Independiente also often took part in continental tournaments. In his first year at the club Ricardo Pavoni was involved in the second win of the Copa Libertadores , his first game for Independiente was a game of the Copa Libertadores in 1965 against the Boca Juniors , the Independiente, which Pavoni's team won 2-0. Despite a 0-1 defeat in the second leg, they were in the final, which they won against CA Peñarol. Ricardo Pavoni was not used in these three finals. In the games for the World Cup that followed shortly afterwards against the winner of the 1964/65 European Cup , Inter Milan , Pavoni played both games, but could not prevent the defeat. After seven years without an international title, the seventies were the most successful time in the club history of Independiente Avellaneda and also in the career of Ricardo Pavoni. In 1972 the Copa Libertadores were won for the second time for Pavoni and for the third time for his club by a final victory against Universitario de Deportes from Peru , the World Cup final was clearly lost against Ajax Amsterdam . In the Copa Libertadores 1973 Independiente managed to defend the title, in the final Colo-Colo from Chile's capital Santiago was defeated. This time they were also successful in the World Cup, Independiente won 1-0 against Juventus Turin with a goal from Ricardo Bochini . This was to remain the only World Cup for Ricardo Pavoni, while two more Copa Libertadores were won. At the 1974 tournament they won the final against São Paulo FC , Ricardo Pavoni scored in the decider to the important 1-0, which secured Independiente the title. In 1975 he was there when Independiente was crowned Libertadores winner for the last nine years and left Unión Española behind in the final.

Ricardo Pavoni is still very popular among supporters of CA Independiente today. During his playing days, he made a name for himself mainly with cross runs and powerful free kicks. After the end of his career, Pavoni remained loyal to Independiente and has often coached youth teams or the club's reserve team to this day. He was also the interim head coach twice after Miguel Brindisi was fired in 1995 and Daniel Garnero in 2010.

Ricardo Pavoni came from his debut on August 15, 1962 to his last appearance on June 23, 1974 on thirteen international matches (two goals) in the Uruguayan national football team . This low number of international matches can be attributed to the fact that it was not common at the time to play as a national player in another country's league. In 1974 Ricardo Pavoni was appointed to the squad for the soccer world championship in Germany by Uruguay's national coach Roberto Porta . With only one point from three games, the team of the two-time world champions retired after the preliminary round. Pavoni played full-time in all three of Uruguay's games and scored the only goal for Uruguay at this World Cup and his second and final international goal in the 87th minute of a 1-1 draw with Bulgaria .
