The Bayernkolleg Augsburg in Augsburg is a state educational institution for obtaining the general university entrance qualification . This establishment of the second educational path enables adults who have already been employed or who have run a household to complete their Abitur in three years .

The college provides general education with knowledge of two foreign languages. It pursues the same goal as the grammar school , whose curricula in grades 11 and 12 also apply to this educational institution. The last two grades are taught according to the system of the Bavarian reformed upper level of the grammar school. The final exam for graduates of the college corresponds to that for high school students. Training at the college is funded according to BAföG .

The Bayernkolleg Augsburg began teaching in 1966 . Attached to the school is a dormitory for 60 graduates as well as common rooms and leisure rooms. More than 500 students attend the adult education facility.

Admission criteria

Entrance to the Bayernkolleg

According to the college, the following conditions apply to entry into grade 1:

  • a minimum age of 18 years (17 years for the preliminary course)
  • Completed vocational training or regular two-year professional activity (unemployment, military or community service can be taken into account for up to one year; running a family household is equivalent to professional activity)
  • Proof of a secondary school leaving certificate, e.g. B. Technical college entrance qualification, completion of a secondary school or business school, successful completion of the 10th grade of a grammar school or a secondary school, qualified vocational qualification, diploma from a vocational school or a vocational school, successful attendance of the pre-class of the BOS
  • Passing the trial period at the college. This lasts until the end of the first half of the school year; only then will it be decided on the basis of the work performed, the work attitude and, if necessary, taking into account special personal circumstances whether it is possible to achieve the educational goal and thus to remain at the college.

Under certain conditions, you can enter grade 1 or directly into grade 2 without a secondary school leaving certificate. In both cases a special entrance examination is required. For example, direct admission to the qualification phase can be considered if someone has passed the 10th grade of the eight-year grammar school and then dropped out of school or, in addition to good knowledge of French, Latin or Spanish, already has a technical college entrance qualification.

Is not recorded,

  • who did not pass a preliminary course,
  • who has twice passed the Abitur examination at the grammar school or the final examination at the technical college / vocational school without success,
  • who has been excluded from attending secondary schools for certain reasons.

Admission procedure

Admission to attend the Bayernkolleg is granted (regardless of the other requirements) to anyone who has either had an interview with the school management or has taken the path of an aptitude test with subsequent advice.

The aptitude test is preceded by a three-part introductory course. In it, the applicant receives information on what prior knowledge is required in the individual subjects and what skills he must have in order to meet the requirements at the beginning of grade 1.

Preliminary course

A twelve-month preliminary course offers applicants without a secondary school leaving certificate the opportunity to enter the college. With the successful completion of the preliminary course, they enter grade 1 of the college. Those who are at least 17 years old and have completed vocational training or can prove that they have worked for at least two years can join the preliminary course. There is no entrance exam. The suitability for training at the college is clarified in an interview and consultation.

In the preliminary course, full-time lessons take place over the course of a school year, usually from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Subjects are German, English, mathematics, physics, (chemistry), biology, history and geography. In addition, if possible, there is a “language propaedeutics ” course to acquire basic grammatical knowledge as a supplement to teaching in German and foreign languages. Special prior knowledge is not required in the individual subjects.

The preliminary course is divided into two independent semesters. German, mathematics and English dominate the first half of the year. There are also classes in biology and social sciences. It is considered to have been passed if there is insufficient performance in at most one subject. In the second half of the year, classes cover German, mathematics, English, physics, chemistry, history, geography and social studies / economics. This section is also passed if there is insufficient performance in at most one subject. The final level corresponds to that of the Realschule.

Independently of the preliminary course, the Association of Friends of the Bayernkolleg eV in Augsburg offers so-called basic courses in the core subjects of German, English and mathematics to demonstrate the level that is required at the beginning of the following introductory phase in the college. The courses are designed to make it easier for people to return to school.

Course of training

The training lasts three school years (without a preliminary course). As in the grammar school, lessons are taught in the mornings, sometimes also in the afternoons, in 45-minute units; Saturday is free of school. A full-time job is eliminated for the duration of school attendance.

The training is divided into a one-year entry phase (grade 1) and a two-year qualification phase (grades 2 and 3).

Entry phase (grade 1)

In grade 1, lessons are given in the core subjects German, mathematics, English, physics and another foreign language (Latin, French or Spanish). In addition, there are the advanced subjects of history with social studies, geography, economics including law, biology, chemistry and religion (ev. Or cath.) Or ethics. Computer science, art, music or choir are available as electives.

The successful completion of grade 1 includes the middle school leaving certificate .

Qualification phase (grades 2 and 3)

The lessons take place in classes, courses and seminars. The range of subjects is divided into:

  • a compulsory program that includes the subjects German, foreign language, mathematics, religion / ethics, history and social studies;
  • an elective program in which it is possible to set individual priorities.
  • Freely selectable subjects such as art, music, choir, philosophy, contemporary history, performing games or Greek.

In the two-year qualification phase, the learning program is put together according to certain rules. In Bavaria, there is a special feature: two two-hour seminars each: the propaedeutic science seminar (W seminar) and the project seminar on study and career orientation (P seminar). The W seminar is intended to provide initial experience in scientific work, the P seminar, in addition to assistance in choosing a career and degree, an insight into project management .

In the Abitur, certificates of achievement are required in five subjects: German, mathematics, a foreign language, a social science subject and another subject. The regular, centrally developed tasks for the Abitur exams at Bavarian grammar schools have to be solved by the students.

advancement

Attending the Bayernkolleg is free. Most of the teaching aids are provided. However, there will be a cost for copies used in class.

All college students who enter grade 1 of the college before the age of 30 are funded for a maximum of four years in accordance with the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) regardless of their parents. Attending the preliminary course is usually funded depending on the parents. Applications can be made when starting school.

Every two rooms have a small shared kitchen. Toilets and showers are in the corridors. There are common rooms on the ground floor and in the basement. In the basement, three washing machines and a dryer can be used by the residents.

history

The Bayernkolleg was founded in 1966 as a state institution in both Augsburg and Schweinfurt and began teaching in the 1966/67 school year. In the early years it was housed in the old grammar school near St. Anna , and in 1970 it was given a new domicile in the Augsburg district of Lechhausen.

In 2011, 36 percent of the students came from families with a migrant background.

On June 6, 2011, the “ Augsburger Allgemeine ” published the deliberations of the Ministry of Culture to relocate the Bayernkolleg from Augsburg to Marktoberdorf. The mind games were triggered by the need for investment in the buildings in Augsburg. A new building of the dormitory and renovation work should be pending for around 15 million euros. The deliberations sparked protests in Augsburg from politicians and colleagues affected by a move, among others. The move from Augsburg is now off the table, but it is still unclear what will happen to the adjoining dormitory.

In the meantime it has been decided that the listed building of the former pedagogical university will be renovated by the state building authority so that the school can move. In addition, the construction work for the extension of the dormitory began.

collaboration

The Bayernkolleg Augsburg is in a constant exchange of experiences with comparable institutions in Bavaria. There are contacts with the Bamberg Theresianum , the Munich College , the Hermann Kesten College in Nuremberg, the Bayern College in Schweinfurt and St. Matthias Waldram in Wolfratshausen.
