The Bayernkolleg Schweinfurt in Schweinfurt ( Musikerviertel district ) is a state institution of the second educational path . It enables young adults who have already been employed or who have run a household to complete their Abitur in three years .

In contrast to the upper level of the vocational school system - Fachoberschule (FOS) and Berufsoberschule (BOS) - which is divided into different training directions, the Bayernkolleg provides a broad general education with knowledge of two foreign languages. It pursues the same goal as the grammar school , whose curricula in grades 11 and 12 also apply to the college. The last two grades are taught according to the system of the Bavarian reformed upper level of the grammar school. The final exam for graduates of the college is also the same central Bavarian Abitur exam as for high school students.

The Bayernkolleg Schweinfurt has existed since 1967. Up to now (as of October 2017) over 2500 high school graduates have successfully completed this school; the average age of the students is 23.61 years (as of October 2019). 36 teachers currently teach 248 students (as of October 2019). A dormitory is attached to the school.

School profile

The Bayernkolleg Schweinfurt is a special kind of high school that enables young adults to acquire the general higher education entrance qualification after completing their vocational training or several years of professional activity. Its aim is to provide the students with basic skills and abilities that enable them to study at all faculties of universities and technical colleges . At the Bayernkolleg, this takes place as part of a lesson that takes into account the special learning conditions of adults and takes their personal situation into account (adult-friendly lessons). In addition, the school sees itself as a living space that enables encounters with art and science and diverse human contacts.

Course of training

The training lasts three school years (without a preliminary course). As at the grammar school, it is taught in the mornings, sometimes also in the afternoons, in 45-minute lessons; Saturday is free. The vacation dates are the same as at all other Bavarian schools. A full-time professional activity cannot and must not be carried out while attending school.

The training is divided into a one-year entry phase (grade I) and a two-year qualification phase (grades II and III).

Initial phase

In grade I, the following subjects are taught in 36 hours per week:

German, English, another foreign language (Latin / French / Russian), history with social studies, economics and law with geography, religion (ev./kath.) Or ethics, mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry.

There is also a one-hour rhetoric and intensification course. If interested, electives can be offered, e.g. B. IT / Internet, art, music, musicals and other foreign languages.

The successful completion of grade I includes the middle school leaving certificate .

Qualification phase

In grades II and III, lessons take place in classes, courses and seminars. The range of subjects is divided into:

  • a compulsory program that includes the subjects German, foreign language, mathematics, religion / ethics, history and social studies;
  • a compulsory elective program in which it is possible to set individual priorities: You can choose a natural science subject, another foreign language or computer science and you can choose between geography and economics / law;
  • Freely selectable subjects for individual profile development, including art, music, psychology, biological work techniques, Japanese, Spanish.

Requirements for admission

Conditions for entry into grade I are:

  • a minimum age of 18 years
  • Completed vocational training or regular two-year professional activity (unemployment, military or community service can be taken into account for up to one year; running a family household is equivalent to professional activity)
  • Proof of a secondary school leaving certificate, e.g. B. Technical college entrance qualification, completion of a secondary school or business school , successful completion of the 10th grade of a grammar school or a secondary school , qualified vocational educational qualification, diploma from a vocational school or a vocational school , successful attendance of the pre-class of the BOS
  • an interview with the school management

Cannot be recorded

  • those who have taken the Abitur examination at the grammar school or the final examination at the FOS / BOS twice without success,
  • who has been excluded from attending secondary schools.

Passing the trial period at the college. This lasts until the end of the first half of the school year (mid-February); only then will it be decided on the basis of the work performed, the work attitude and, if necessary, taking into account special personal circumstances whether it is possible to achieve the educational goal and thus to remain at the college.

Preliminary course

The one-year preliminary course offers applicants who do not have an intermediate school leaving certificate the opportunity to enter the college. Successful completion of the preliminary course entitles you to enter grade I of the college. The preliminary course can be repeated.

The same admission requirements apply to the preliminary course as to grade I (see above) - except for the secondary school leaving certificate; the minimum age is 17 years. The suitability for training at the college is clarified in an interview and consultation.

The lessons extend over a school year and - as in grades I to III - take place as full-time lessons, but usually only in the mornings (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.). The subjects covered include: German, English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, history and geography. There is also a "language propaedeutics" course to acquire basic grammatical knowledge as a supplement to teaching in German and foreign languages.

Admission procedure

Further information on the documents required for registration can be found on the website of the Bayernkolleg Schweinfurt.

Special courses

From 1977 to 2018 there were special courses at the Bayernkolleg Schweinfurt, which enabled ethnic repatriates and contingent refugees from the area of the former Soviet Union to acquire the higher education entrance qualification.

Special classes for people with a migration background and language-sensitive lessons

Since the school year 2016/17, special classes for people with a migration background have existed at Bayernkolleg Schweinfurt . They have their own timetable, which particularly support the acquisition of knowledge in the subject of German. In spring 2020, the first graduates from these classes successfully passed their Abitur exams.

Academic language acquisition is often a particular hurdle for people with and without a migration background. That is why the Bayernkolleg Schweinfurt takes advantage of what is known as language-sensitive teaching and provides targeted support to students.

Ability to study

The Bayernkolleg provides a broad and in-depth general education as the basis for successful studies in all disciplines or for a professional reorientation. It promotes the linguistic, mathematical, scientific and social skills of the students equally without specializing in certain areas of training. However, the individual focus within the reformed upper school makes it possible to take personal preferences and talents into account. The school therefore endeavors to offer as diverse a course program as possible with numerous options. The training duration of three years guarantees that there is enough time for a well-founded education and training - even with unfavorable personal starting conditions.

School as a living space

In addition to the lessons, the Bayernkolleg enables all kinds of encounters:

  • Theater and music groups, author readings and art exhibitions convey art experiences and provide space for your own creative design.
  • Lecture events and study days provide insight into the scientific work on certain topics.
  • Excursions and study trips not only complement learning in class, but also combine it closely with communal activities in leisure time.
  • The dormitory attached to the school is a place of diverse social contacts and common leisure activities.
  • The in-house cafeteria is a daily meeting point where relaxed conversation is the focus.

The Bayernkolleg sees itself as a “place of learning” in the broadest sense: It aims to impart knowledge, practice forms of work, enable new experiences and thus help to develop a personal perspective for future life.

Dorm

The student dormitory of the Bayernkolleg is right next to the school building. It has 60 single rooms and three barrier-free rooms on five floors. Each room is fully furnished and equipped with a kitchen block. In addition to the rooms, there is a lounge, showers and toilets on each floor. In the basement there is a laundry room with a washing machine, dryer, ironing tables and a fitness room.

advancement

Attending the Bayernkolleg is free. Most teaching aids, such as books, are provided. However, fees are charged for copies used in class.

Many college students who enter grade I of the college before the age of 30 are funded for a maximum of four years according to the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG). The amount of the monthly allowance, which, unlike the student BAföG, does not have to be repaid later, depends, among other things, on whether the preliminary course or grades I to III are attended. Health insurance, long-term care insurance and housing supplements are granted for additional benefits.
