The Olympia-Morata-Gymnasium in Schweinfurt is a gymnasium which is attended by the majority (approx. 85% of the students) by girls and which emerged in 1980 from an all- girls high school .

history

The Schweinfurt Töchterschulverein founded a private secondary school at Zehntstrasse 18 in 1878. The first seven students received their diploma in 1879. In 1880 the school moved to a new building at An den Schanzen. The school stayed here until 1955.

The school was taken over in 1911 by the city of Schweinfurt as the “Municipal Higher Girls' School”. By decision of the city, the school was converted into the six-class “Städtische Mädchenlyceum” in 1925. Only in 1938 was followed by the expansion of the eight-year high school for girls as "Municipal Secondary School for Girls' High School with permission. The first school leaving certificates were issued to 8 schoolgirls in 1941. After the Second World War, school life was resumed in 1946.

This was followed by two renaming: in 1947 in "Girls' upper secondary school" and in 1951 in "Städtisches Mädchen-Realgymnasium Schweinfurt". In 1952 an architects' competition for a new school building on Steinstrasse, today's Ignaz-Schön-Strasse, was announced. The current building was built according to the plans of the Munich architects Woita and Angerer and inaugurated in 1956. At the same time the name was given: " Olympia-Morata -Schule" (OMS). The school received a new gymnasium in 1957.

The modern language branch of the school was supplemented by a social science branch in 1966. At the request of the city of Schweinfurt, the school was nationalized in 1970 and renamed "Olympia-Morata-Gymnasium" (OMG). The high school took part in the orientation level experiment . A pedagogical seminar was established in 1973 and the college level in 1976 . The first issue of the school newspaper VERSUCH was published in 1974. This was renamed and redesigned to OLYMP in 2017.

The high school opened for boys in 1980. In 1989 it was given a new triple gymnasium on Paul-Gerhardt-Straße. In the 2006/07 school year, Johannes von der Forst, a teacher from the Olympia-Morata-Gymnasium, won the competition for the title of “Germany's coolest teacher”, organized for the first time by Ki.Ka. Since 2009 there has been an in-school lunch in a separate building and now there is also a full-day care offer for the lower grades.

building

The school building, built in 1956, consists of two wings, each with a square basic shape and inner courtyard (atrium buildings), which are connected by a covered corridor. One houses the school administration and special subject rooms (biology, physics, chemistry, music, library, etc.), and the second houses the pupils' classrooms. The inner courtyards are partially green and are used for breaks and events. In 2009 a small, third wing, the former caretaker's apartment, was converted into a cafeteria with rooms for open all-day care. Special features of the school building are a fully furnished basement theater and a teaching kitchen, as cooking is also taught in practical social classes.

classes

School branches

Today the school offers a linguistic branch as well as an economics and social science branch with a social science profile and internships accompanying classes. Up to and including the 7th grade, the curriculum is identical for both branches, after which there is a split.

The foreign language lessons include the possible language sequences English-Latin-French, English-French-Spanish and English-Latin-Spanish in the language branch. In the economic and social science branch, the third foreign language is replaced by social studies and practical social lessons as well as internships in the social field (e.g. childcare facilities, hospitals, old people's homes).

Seminary school

In terms of teacher training, the school is a seminar school in the subjects of German, geography, English, French and sport (female).

Wind class

A special feature since the 2005/2006 school year is the wind class, in which all 5th and 6th grade students learn a wind instrument in regular music lessons and in additional lessons. The high school cooperates with the local music school .

Community events

While the lower grades drive together in school camps, in the 7th grade there is a joint ski course in the Alps and in the 8th grade a language trip. In the higher grades, students take part in international exchange programs and school trips with European destinations.
