Wilhelm Schmid (born April 26, 1953 in Billenhausen / Bavarian Swabia ) is a German philosopher who specializes in the philosophy of the art of living .

Live and act

Schmid is the son of a farmer and has five siblings. After an apprenticeship as a typesetter and four years in the armed forces, Schmid made up his Abitur in 1980 at the Bayernkolleg Augsburg . In Augsburg he joined the artist group “Der Kreis”, founded in 1969, whose spiritus rectus was the graphic artist, printer and writer Michael Tonfeld. From 1977 to 1980 he was chairman of the Augsburg Young Democrats (FDP). In 1980 he began studying philosophy and history at the Free University of Berlin , the Sorbonne in Paris and the University of Tübingen , which he completed in 1991 with a doctoral thesis on Michel Foucault . In Berlin he was a co-founder of the philosophical discussion group "Momo", which has existed since then.

Schmid took on teaching positions at the University of Leipzig (1990–1991), the Technical University of Berlin (1991–1992), the Erfurt University of Education (1993–1999) and the University of Jena (1999–2000). In 1997, he completed his habilitation in Erfurt with his thesis “Foundation for a Philosophy of the Art of Living”. In 2004 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Erfurt, where he taught until the age limit. He was visiting professor ( DAAD - short-term lectureships ) at the University of Riga / Latvia and at the State University of Tbilisi / Georgia . From 1998 to 2007 he worked regularly as a “philosophical pastor” at the Affoltern am Albis Hospital (near Zurich ). His books had a total print run of around 1.5 million copies by 2018 and have been translated into numerous languages.

Schmid's focus is the philosophy of the art of living, in this context he deals with the human search for meaning and various topics such as happiness and unhappiness, love, serenity. He gives international lectures and was a guest on the radio or gave lectures there for example on SRF , SWR2 , BR and Deutschlandfunk .

Schmid lives in Berlin, is second married and has four children.
