Volker Caysa

Volker Caysa (born June 24, 1957 in Halberstadt ; † August 3, 2017 in Leipzig ) was a German philosopher .

Life

Caysa studied philosophy at the Karl Marx University (KMU) in Leipzig with a degree in philosopher and stayed as an assistant at the philosophy faculty of the KMU. During this time Helmut Seidel's specific practice philosophy , which can be described as a historical-materialistic identity philosophy , was formative for him. In 1988 Volker Caysa did his doctorate at the KMU and began his career as a philosopher of sensible life with his dissertation on the "Science of Logic" as the metaphysics of the work of reason . He stayed until the philosophical faculty was liquidated in the course of the political changeas a university lecturer at the SME. As a GDR philosopher, he couldn't find a job as a university professor in Germany in the 1990s. After his discharge from the university he worked as a freelance philosopher and author until he was later given access again as a research assistant.

Caysa was one of the co-founders of the Nietzsche Society , of which he was a long-time member of the board and which he headed from 2002 to 2004 as chairman. In the 1990s he worked together with Helmut Seidel to set up the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in Leipzig. In 2002 he received his habilitation at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy of the University of Leipzig with the work body utopias - a philosophical anthropology of sport . From 2003 to 2013 he worked as a professor at the universities in Opole and Łódź and from 2003 as a private lecturer at the Institute for Philosophy at the University of Leipzig. At the Nietzsche Society , he and Gunter Gebauer founded the working group “Anthropology of the Body” in 2005 with the aim of developing a modern body philosophy. In the field of art philosophy, Volker Caysa worked together with his wife Konstanze, Durs Grünbein and Jonathan Meese . They got involved on the board of the Nietzsche Society, as members of the cultural studies advisory board of the Bremen East Clinic and with the establishment of the Leipzig Forum for Art and Philosophy in February 2017 for the further development of the "theory of the empirical". From 2006 to 2010, Caysa gave lectures on this topic at the Philosophical Institute of the University of Leipzig. His wife transcribed the lectures and in addition to "Empractical Reason", the jointly developed volumes "Asceticism as a Behavioral Revolt" and "Thinking of the Empractical" were created.

Before studying philosophy, Caysa was active as an athlete in the GDR. In 1977 he achieved a best distance of 55.74 m in hammer throwing. As a former athlete, he advocated analyzing doping practices as an expression of the industrialization of the body .

Caysa has a son. He was married to the old Germanist Uta Störmer-Caysa , professor at the University of Mainz , and was married to the artist-philosopher Konstanze Caysa until his death.
