Ravish Malhotra

Ravish Malhotra (born December 25, 1943 in Lahore , now Pakistan ) is an Indian pilot and former space flight candidate. He was a substitute for the first Indian spaceman, Rakesh Sharma .

Malhotra was a test pilot for the Indian Air Force . In 1982 he was selected as one of the two candidates for an Indian's first flight into space. The choice for the Soyuz T-11 flight ultimately fell on Rakesh Sharma, who flew into space with Yuri Malyshev and Gennady Strekalov and spent a week on the Salyut 7 space station . Malhotra formed the reserve crew with Anatoly Berezovoy and Georgi Grechko . Since further Russian-Indian space flights were not planned, Malhotra retired from the space program after the landing of the return spacecraft Soyuz T-10 on April 11, 1984.

Malhotra then worked again as a test pilot at the test center in Bangalore . He reached the rank of Brigadier General ( Air Commodore ). He then moved to the space department of Dynamatic Technologies Ltd. in Bangalore. He is now retired.
