Helmut Seidel

Helmut Seidel (born June 21, 1929 in Welkersdorf ; † July 27, 2007 in Leipzig ) was a German Marxist philosopher .

Life

Seidel studied philosophy in Leipzig and Moscow . He received his doctorate in 1961 from the Karl Marx University in Leipzig with a topic on Rosa Luxemburg and the German labor movement . In 1966 he completed his habilitation, the habilitation thesis was entitled Philosophy and Reality. On the development and foundation of Marxist philosophy . From 1962 he was a lecturer at the Karl Marx University, from 1979 full professor for the history of philosophy there . From 1970 to 1974 he was director of the Marxist-Leninist Philosophy and Scientific Socialism section at Karl Marx University. As a university lecturer in Leipzig, he mainly devoted himself to Greek antiquity , Spinoza , German idealism , left Hegelianism and Marxist philosophy . Seidel's social philosophy, whose basic sexistential is the practice understood as work , moves in the area of ​​tension between work and dialogical interaction . “Seidel's philosophy of practice assumes that the reasonable reproduction of a humane existence is dependent on work in the sense of the fundamental, elementary form of human activity, conscious action , and that formal, abstract work as an elementary species activity of each individual, as the simplest and common life activity that enables a meaningful and recognized existence for people in the first place. ”After the end of the SED dictatorship in the GDR in 1990, he retired from the university and took early retirement. He was a founding member of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in Leipzig.

He was married to the historian Jutta Seidel .
