Gunter Gebauer (born January 23, 1944 in Timmendorfer Strand ) is a German philosopher and sports sociologist. He is a professor at the Free University of Berlin ; In 2012 he retired.

Life

Gebauer grew up in Kiel and after graduating from high school, studied philosophy , general and comparative literature , linguistics and sports science in Kiel, Mainz and Berlin . In 1969 he received his doctorate at the TU Berlin in philosophy with a thesis on Wittgenstein's theory of language . In 1975 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on an analytical theory of understanding at the TH Karlsruhe.

From 1969 to 1977 he was Hans Lenk's assistant at the Philosophical Institute at the Technical University of Karlsruhe . In 1978 he accepted a professorship for philosophy and sociology of sport at the Free University of Berlin. In 1995 he turned down a chair for general philosophy at the German Sport University in Cologne and in the same year received a professorship for general philosophy at the Institute for Philosophy at the Free University of Berlin.

Gebauer was president of the international Philosophical Society for the Study of Sports from 1991 to 1993 . In 1993 he became spokesman for the Interdisciplinary Center for Historical Anthropology at the Free University of Berlin. From 1999 to 2010 he was a member of the Collaborative Research Center "Cultures of the Peerformative" with his own research projects. From 2007 to 2012 he was a member of the excellence cluster "Languages ​​of Emotion" as a researcher. From 2013 to 2018 he was chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Franco-German research institute "Center Marc Bloch" in Berlin. Gebauer held visiting professorships in Paris, Strasbourg and Hiroshima (Japan).

His work focuses on the topics of philosophy of language , anthropology, aesthetics and sports sociology. Gebauer is a member of the German Academy for Football Culture . He was the laudator of the “Football Slogan of the Year” award at the German Football Culture Prize 2015 and defined the football slogan from a linguistic and linguistic-philosophical perspective.

At the beginning of December 2018 he was awarded the ethics prize of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). In December 2018, Gebauer expressed considerable criticism of the DOSB and top-class sport. There is a kind of nepotism in the DOSB, there is a lack of transparency, Gebauer told Deutschlandfunk . With regard to the German sponsorship of sports, he said that pursuing a sporting career bears the risk of falling behind professionally. Turning top athletes into idols and trailblazers is a big mistake, he said.

Private

Gebauer has two sons, Laurent (born 1970) and Henri (born 1979).
