Late career seminar

For 90 years, until 2017, the educational institution in Waldram was known as the “late professions seminar”. The seminarians should be motivated in their vocation for a spiritual office in the Catholic Church, especially the priestly profession. Therefore, the visit to the facility was originally reserved for men baptized Catholics who were housed in the seminary. In addition to the seminar director, spiritualists and prefects took care of the spiritual accompaniment of the young men. The common life in the seminar under the direction of the director, a Catholic priest, was characterized by common church services, prayer and meal times and various services. In addition, the seminarians were involved in the parish work of the Waldram parish of St. Joseph the Worker. The seminar was in contact with religious communities, the seminaries, the dioceses and other church institutions for mutual exchange. Over 400 of the former students of the late vocational seminar placed themselves as priests or religious in the service of the Catholic Church.

history

1927: origin

The institution was founded on September 1, 1927 by Archbishop Michael Cardinal von Faulhaber in Munich as a late career seminar and late career school, at the Hansa-Heime location in Munich-Schwabing. The seminary and school were originally geared towards obtaining a university entrance qualification in preparation for the profession of Catholic priest. On May 1, 1929, the school was moved to Fürstenried Castle by Johannes Neuhäusler . In 1932 the first school leaving examination took place, but by a commission from the Pasing grammar school . Out of 13 candidates, 10 received the school-leaving certificate. In 1933 Father Alfons Maria Zimmermann OSB from Metten Monastery took over  the management of the school. In September 1939 the seminary and school were closed.

1949: new beginning

On October 15, 1949, the late professions seminar was reopened, initially in Fürstenried. The former headmaster Alfons Maria Zimmermann returned to Fürstenried, 59 students moved in. In September 1957, the facility was relocated to Wolfratshausen-Waldram in the converted administration building of the former Föhrenwald ammunition and DP camp . In 1958 Karl Braun took over the management of the school. Director Zimmermann returned to Metten Monastery, where he died on March 18, 1962.

1964: State recognition

On March 12, 1964, the school received state recognition from the Bavarian Ministry of Education and Culture and since then has been able to award the general higher education entrance qualification like a state grammar school . In 1968, the late vocational grammar school was affiliated with the Altsprachliche Kolleg - Institute for obtaining university entrance qualification as an official institution of the second educational path. In 1971 the school facility was opened to external students. This caused the number of students to rise to over 200.

1982: Old and new language

Since it was raised to a foundation on February 9, 1982, the official name was "Archbishop's late professions seminar St. Matthias in Wolfratshausen-Waldram". At the beginning of the 1993 school year, the old-language college was supplemented by a new -language college .

2011: new building

The old school building on Bettingerstraße, which was originally part of the administration of the Föhrenwald camp , had been in a ramshackle state for a long time, so that teaching had become unreasonable for the students and teachers over time. Since September 2011, the St. Matthias grammar school and college have been housed in a new building that stretches along Thomastraße.

2016: realignment

Due to the decreasing number of interested parties, the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising decided in 2016 to move the late professions seminar, which in the course of its history can look back on over 400 priests or religious among its former students, into a dormitory with a Christian character for adult students. The realignment became effective with the amendment of the statutes of the foundation renamed the "Archbishop's Foundation St. Matthias Wolfratshausen-Waldram" on December 21, 2017. The focus of the foundation's purpose on the spiritual professions was thereby canceled. One of the goals is still to introduce young people in St. Matthias Waldram to the diversity and breadth of vocations and professions in the church. The St. Matthias technical college, which started operations in the 2017/18 school year, is also in line with this goal.

Schools in St. Matthias

St. Matthias Waldram comprises a grammar school, college and technical college. The grammar school and the college are designed to give young women and men who want to continue their education the opportunity to acquire or catch up on the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur). This directly after a secondary school leaving certificate or after vocational training or work. Since the 2017/18 school year, the range of schools on offer has been expanded to include the St. Matthias technical college, at which students obtained their technical college entrance qualification for the first time in 2019.

School attendance was previously reserved for young men of the Catholic faith. Since the introduction of the college, the grammar school and college St. Matthias have also been able to attend pupils of other denominations or religions, as well as those who do not belong to a religion. It is assumed that the students are open to religious and Christian topics. Attending religious education, either Catholic or Protestant, is compulsory. Ethics classes are not given. The principal is Ralf Wiechmann. The facility is managed by Joachim Burkard , who has been director of the "Archbishop's Foundation St. Matthias Wolfratshausen-Waldram" since May 2016.

Applicants with a middle school leaving certificate who submit a pedagogical report that certifies their unrestricted suitability for the grammar school may be able to attend the introductory course. It corresponds to the state introductory class . Successful attendance of this introductory course entitles you to enter the qualification phase of the grammar school. St. Matthias thus also offers a three-year high school path to general higher education entrance qualification.

College

At the college , which is considered to be a "secondary school", people with professional experience can catch up on their Abitur in full-time lessons. Requirements for attending the college:

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Completed vocational training or two years of employment
  • Middle school leaving certificate . Applicants who cannot provide evidence of a secondary school leaving certificate can take an entrance examination or attend the preliminary course.

  • The ancient language college with the language sequence Latin, Greek or Latin, English
  • The new language college with the language sequence English, Latin or English, French.

Technical college

The “ Fachoberschule St. Matthias” started operations in the 2017/18 school year . It is limited to the social sector and leads to the technical college entrance qualification in two school years, grades 11 and 12.

Dorm

Since the 2016/17 school year, the original late-career seminar has moved into a dormitory with a Christian character. All adult students who want to live in a Christian community can apply there for a place in a dormitory.
