The tiger scallop ( Palliolum tigerinum , syn .: Chlamys tigrinus or Camptonectes tigrinus ) is a type of shell from the family of scallops (Pectinidae).

features

The convex cases, which have almost the same flaps, are roughly round or slightly egg-shaped (slightly higher than wide) and have a maximum diameter of 3.2 centimeters. The upper left flap is only slightly more arched than the lower right flap. The ears are very unequal in size, with a significantly larger front ear. The anterior ear of the right valve has a deep incision for the byssus . The ears have radial ribs. The vertebra is pointed and does not protrude over the dorsal margin. The edge of the case is finely indented.

The ornamentation consists of fine, even and tightly spaced radial ribs. Occasionally three to seven ribs emerge a little more strongly to the vertebrae. The ribs can also protrude more strongly towards the edge of the housing. On the lower right flap, the ribs are wider and slightly flatter. The skin is thin but firm, slightly translucent and colored brick-red to red-violet, usually with white spots or transverse bands. The lower right flap is usually a little darker in color. The surface is only slightly shiny.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the tiger scallop ( Palliolum tigerinum ) extends in the eastern Atlantic from northern Norway to the Cape Verde Islands . It is also found in the North Sea and the western Mediterranean ( Balearic Islands ). It can also be found in the eastern North Sea (e.g. near Helgoland ), but it is very rare.

It lives on hard floors from shallow water (approx. 9 meters) to a depth of approx. 380 meters.

Taxonomy

The species was first scientifically described in 1776 by Otto Friedrich Müller in the combination Pecten tigerinus . The taxon was later placed in the genera Chlamys and Camptonectes . The World Register of Marine Species assigns them to the genus Palliolum Monterosato, 1884. The species name appears in the literature mostly in the misspelling tigrinus , which goes back to Lovell Augustus Reeve (1853).
