AFC Cup 2015
AFC Champions League 2016

The AFC Cup 2016 was the 13th season of the second most important Asian competition for club teams in football after the Champions League since it was founded in the 2004 season . 40 clubs from 23 national associations took part in the competition.

The season began with the newly introduced pre-qualification on August 11, 2015 and ended with the final at the Qatar SC Stadium on November 5, 2016. There al-Quwa al-Dschawiya defeated the Indian club Bengaluru FC 1-0 and was able to win his first title. Defending champions Johor Darul Ta'zim FC from Malaysia were eliminated in the semi-finals.

The top scorer was the Iraqi Hammadi Ahmad from al-Quwa al-Jawiya with 16 goals. He was also named the best player of the competition.

Qualified countries

The following allocation of the clubs to the individual qualifying rounds or the group phase was determined from the AFC four-year ranking in 2014, which was based on the performance of the respective football association in their competitions (Champions League and AFC Cup) over the past four years. The clubs are considered to 70 percent and the national teams to 30 percent (maximum 100 points). The following conditions apply to both regions (West and East Asia):

  • The associations in places 7 to 12 of the four-year ranking will receive a qualifying place in the Champions League.
    • If these teams reach the group stage of the Champions League, they will be replaced in the AFC Cup by another team from the same association.
    • If these teams do not reach the group stage of the Champions League, they will continue to play in the group stage of the AFC Cup.
    • The seventh and eighth placed association will also receive a direct starting place.
    • The ninth to twelve-placed associations also receive a qualification place.
  • The associations in positions 13 to 16 will receive a direct starting position and a qualification position.
  • The remaining associations (17th to 23rd place), most of them (possible) participants in the President's Cup until 2014 , can take part in the pre-qualification.
