Muckle Green Holm is a now uninhabited island of the Orkney in Scotland . It is about 28 hectares and rises to 28 meters above sea level. The literal meaning of the name is contradicting itself. "Holm" from the old Norse holmr means small island. "Muckle" is Scottish for "big". Muckle Green Holm is a big little green island. To the south of Muckle Green Holm is Little Green Holm, and between the two is the Sound of Green Holms.

There are prehistoric and / or medieval traces that indicate cultivation or a monastery. It is unclear whether the Old Norse name of the island was Hellisey, which is mentioned in the Orkneyinga saga .

Sweyn Asleifsson and his men are said to have hidden in a cave on Hellisey in 1147 from Earl "Rögnvald Kali Kolssons" people with their boat. "... there is a large cave in the rock and the sea came up to the entrance of the cave at high tide". The legend tells that they left their boat in the cave and borrowed a small boat from the monks and went to Sanday where Sweyn had a relative. There are actually caves on the east side of the island that a boat can fit into.

Individual evidence

  1. This is the same name as Hellisey in Iceland , which is out of the question. While Helliar Holm at Shapinsay is without caves and would not be an option either.
  2. Rognvald Kali Kolsson (d. 1158), also known as Rognvald the Crusader, is one of the most important Earls of Orkney. His deeds are depicted in the Orkneyinga saga. He became Earl of Orkney in 1136 and promoted the cult of Saint Magnus with the building of the cathedral in Kirkwall. He joined a crusade to the Holy Land in 1150.
