history
The 15,000-seat stadium was built in 1974 for the coronation of the fourth Druk Gyalpos , Jigme Singye Wangchuck . It initially had a capacity of 10,000 spectators. This was increased to 15,000 during a renovation in 2007. The occasion was the centenary of the Wangchuck dynasty , which has ruled Bhutan since 1907, and the impending coronation of the fifth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck , on November 6, 2008.
In 1885 Ugyen Wangchuk put down the last uprising of the unrest that had lasted since 1882 on this site. The area with an area of around 11 hectares has served as a place for public events since the time of the third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorje Wangchuck .
