The Changlimithang National Stadium is a stadium in Thimphu , Bhutan . It is currently mainly used for soccer games , archery competitions and cricket . It was also the place where Bhutan's first open-air theater performance, A Tale of Two Cities, took place.

history

The 15,000-seat stadium was built in 1974 for the coronation of the fourth Druk Gyalpos , Jigme Singye Wangchuck . It initially had a capacity of 10,000 spectators. This was increased to 15,000 during a renovation in 2007. The occasion was the centenary of the Wangchuck dynasty , which has ruled Bhutan since 1907, and the impending coronation of the fifth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck , on November 6, 2008.

In 1885 Ugyen Wangchuk put down the last uprising of the unrest that had lasted since 1882 on this site. The area with an area of ​​around 11 hectares has served as a place for public events since the time of the third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorje Wangchuck .

Trivia

Johan Kramer's documentary The Other Endgame was partly filmed at Changlimithang Stadium. The film was about a football match between the two worst-placed teams on the FIFA rankings at the time, Bhutan and Montserrat . Bhutan, which is in 202nd place, won 4-0 against the 203rd in the world rankings, Montserrat.
