Life

Josef Dengler was born as the oldest of eleven children of a small farmer family. After a brief occupation in agriculture , he left his parents' farm in search of work. During the First World War he served as a soldier from 1914 to 1918. In 1910, at the age of 16, he joined the Christian working-class youth. From 1919 Dengler earned his living as a factory worker. He was also involved in the Christian social trade union movement . Dengler was elected as their state secretary for Lower Austria in 1924; In 1926 he moved into the Chamber of Labor as a trade unionist .

In May 1927 Dengler was sworn in in Vienna as a member of the Federal Council, to which he was to belong until May 1934. He belonged to the Freedom League and became its regional leader for Lower Austria.

During the time of the authoritarian corporate state , Dengler was a functionary in the unified trade union and a member of the National Leader Council of the Fatherland Front . In April 1934 Dengler was appointed government commissioner of the Baden regional health insurance fund, and in December 1936 its chairman. From 1937 to 1938 he was a member of the municipal council of Baden , from which, however, the National Socialists ousted him after the “Anschluss” of Austria .

From March 1938 to January 1939 he was taken into " protective custody " by those in power . Although Dengler was then observed by the Secret State Police , he managed to become a member of a resistance group in Lower Austria from 1942 onwards. Their goal was to make preparations to rebuild Austria in the time after the liberation by the Allies.

On April 16, 1945, Dengler opened the office of the Austrian Workers' Union for Lower Austria in Vienna. In April 1945 he was also one of the founding members of the Lower Austria People's Party .

In December 1945 Dengler was elected to the National Council as a member of the ÖVP . Dengler was then active for around 14 years, until June 1959, as a member of the National Council.

He died one day before his 82nd birthday in May 1976 in Vienna.
