Ugyen Wangchuck
Ugyen Wangchuck (from Tib . : u rgyan dbang phyug ; also Ugyen Wangchuk ; Deb Nagpo ; * 1861 ; † August 21, 1926 in Bumthang ) was the first king ( Druk Gyalpo ) of Bhutan from December 17, 1907 until his death . The Penlop Tongsas defeated his political enemies from his base in central Bhutan and united it despite civil wars and uprisings (1882-1885).
In December 1907, the people of Punakhas - the capital of the time - elected him heir to the monarchy and king for life. During his reign, the slow reform process began in Bhutan , as he saw to it that schools were built. In 1910 he signed the Anglo-Bhutanese treaty.
For his help on an expedition of the Francis Younghusband to Lhasa , he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) in 1905 , Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India (KCSI) in 1911 and Knight Grand Commander of the Order of in 1921 the Indian Empire (GCIE).
