"The Other Final" - The other finals (original title: . The Other Final Bhutan vs. Montserrat ) is a documentary film by Dutch director Johan Kramer from the year 2003 , that of a football - international match between Bhutan and Montserrat is.

action

The national soccer teams of the Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan , located in the Himalayas , and the Caribbean island of Montserrat , which was largely devastated by a volcano between 1995 and 1997 , were in the last two positions in the FIFA world rankings (202nd place in Bhutan and 203rd place in Montserrat) . On June 30, 2002, the day of the final of the 2002 World Cup between Brazil and Germany, the two teams met in front of around 25,000 spectators at the Changlimithang Stadium , which is over 2,700 m high in the Bhutanese capital Thimphu . The game ended 4-0 (1-0) for Bhutan.

The Dutch director Johan Kramer documented this international match as well as the preparations in the participating countries and on the part of the organizers. The film shows the enthusiasm of players and fans from completely different cultures. On the one hand, an otherwise tranquil Buddhist mountain people played, on the other hand a colorful troop of calypso - and reggae- loving islanders with British passports - far away from the stadiums that are usually the focus of football interest.

background

The international match between Bhutan and Montserrat was initiated by Johan Kramer under the impression that the Dutch national team had left the qualification for the 2002 World Cup. The game was then played with the approval of FIFA . At a press conference recorded in the film in Bhutan, Kramer points out that the sponsors of the finalists Germany and Brazil - adidas and Nike - showed no interest in sponsoring the teams for this game in Bhutan when asked.

The team from Bhutan was trained by the Dutch coach Arie Schans , who often works abroad for mostly smaller clubs or national teams.

The match was overseen by FIFA referee Steve Bennett from England.
