The quarter-final first leg of the UEFA Champions League against AS Monaco should kick off there at 8:45 p.m. A police officer and the player Marc Bartra were injured in the explosion . Three identical letters of confession were found near the crime scene . On April 21, 2017, an urgent suspect was arrested who was accused of greed as a motive . The perpetrator was sentenced to 14 years in prison on November 27, 2018 for 28 murder attempts.

Course of events

On the evening of April 11, 2017, the Borussia Dortmund soccer team drove from the team hotel L'Arrivée in Dortmund's Höchst district to the Westfalenstadion, where the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final against AS Monaco was to take place at 8:45 p.m. During the journey, three explosive devices with metal pins that had been hidden in a hedge exploded at Wittbräucker Straße 563 at around 7.15 p.m. One of these metal pins bored into the headrest of a bus seat, and another into a wall across the street. The explosives achieved an explosive effect of over 100 meters. The defender Marc Bartra suffered a broken spoke and a foreign body blasted into his arm when he was hit by fragments of windshield flying around. He was operated on in the hospital that same night and was out as a player for around four weeks. In addition, the explosion caused an accompanying motorcycle policeman to be traumatized and shocked . The fact that the middle and therefore most dangerous of the three explosive devices was installed a little too high and therefore detonated over the bus meant that there were no worse consequences.

As a result of these events, the soccer game was canceled and rescheduled to April 12 at 6:45 p.m. The appointment was set by mutual agreement on the evening of the crime by UEFA, the club and the Dortmund police. Borussia Dortmund lost 2: 3. If BVB hadn't started, UEFA would have rated the game 3-0 for Monaco. The club's coach , Thomas Tuchel , criticized the short-term scheduling.

First investigation

The State Criminal Police Office of North Rhine-Westphalia took over the first investigation on the evening of the crime. On the night of the crime , the Federal Prosecutor General took hold of the case and commissioned the Federal Criminal Police Office with the further investigations.

In the vicinity of the attack site, forensic investigation found three apparently Islamist letters of confession with the same text, in which, among other things, the withdrawal of tornadoes from Syria and the closure of Ramstein Air Base are requested. An Islamic Studies report commissioned by the investigators casts doubt on the authenticity of the letters. The authors probably tried to give the impression that the act had an Islamist background. An alleged letter of confession from an anti- fascist group was published by strangers on the Internet portal Indymedia used by left-wing extremists . The federal prosecutor's office doubted the authenticity of this letter as well.

The Attorney General obtained an arrest warrant for an Iraqi who was provisionally arrested in connection with the crime for alleged membership in the terrorist organization Islamic State . According to the investigating authorities, however, there was no evidence that the arrested person was involved.

An Austrian BVB fan and shareholders who to hedge its gains sales warrants had bought, fell before the attack unusual purchases on this paper, the high for a sell off down the BVB share gains were delivered. He suspected someone in the know and contacted the investigating special commission and the BVB directly on the following day , informed the ARD stock exchange editorial office and wrote an article in the online forum of the daily newspaper Der Standard . As a result, the investigators began to observe the suspect on April 13 , even after a suspected money laundering report from comdirect bank reached the authorities.

Arrest a suspect

On April 21, 2017, the public prosecutor's office issued an arrest warrant against a suspect and ordered pre- trial detention on suspicion of 28 times attempted murder , causing an explosive device and dangerous bodily harm . The suspect is Sergej W. from Freudenstadt , 28 at the time of the crime , who is a German and Russian citizen and, according to investigators, had trained as an electronics technician for industrial engineering . Most recently he lived in Rottenburg am Neckar and worked as an electrician in a Tübingen heating plant. The investigators suspect the motive is greed . His arrest by GSG 9 on the same day came after it became known that Sergei W. had booked a flight to Saint Petersburg shortly after the attack and was looking for accommodation in Russia. This raised concerns that he wanted to break away.

According to the investigators the suspect has the morning of the attack Tags sales warrants on the shares purchased by Borussia Dortmund. With the attack, he had forced the BVB share to fall and wanted to make a profit with the put options, the value of which rose disproportionately when the share price fell. W. is said to have processed the purchase of the derivatives from the team hotel. In addition, it is certain that W. slept in the Borussia Dortmund team hotel the night before the attack. He should be very well versed in dealing with ignition technology.

Trial and verdict

At the end of August 2017, the Dortmund public prosecutor brought charges against Sergej W. for attempted murder. The investigators of the BAO "Pott" of the Federal Criminal Police Office, who first investigated suspected terrorism on behalf of the Federal Prosecutor's Office, are now assuming the motive of greed , which is why responsibility was transferred to the local public prosecutor's office in mid-May 2017. The suspect initially refused to testify. The proceedings before the Dortmund Regional Court began on December 21, 2017. 16 co-plaintiffs , including BVB players , joined the lawsuit . For the time being, the court had planned 18 hearing days until the end of March 2018.

On January 8, 2018, the defendant Sergei W. confessed to the fact, but denied any intention to kill. He wanted to fake an attack. He tried to deliberately design the explosive devices so "that no personal injury was to be expected". On the other hand, an expert took the view that the effects of such bombs could not be controlled by a layperson. A fellow inmate of Sergei W. testified in mid-May 2018 as a witness at the trial that he had told him that his aim was to kill as many people as possible.

The prosecution assumed that the perpetrator had accepted serious injuries, if not even the death of the victims. In contrast, the court even assumed an intention to kill. On November 27, 2018, W. was sentenced to 14 years in prison for attempted murder in 28 cases, and he was found fully guilty. Both Sergej W. and the public prosecutor's office applied for an appeal to the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe . On January 9, 2019, the appeal by Sergei W. was withdrawn.
