Status: end of career

Thomas Frank (born October 9, 1973 in Frederiksværk ) is a former Danish football player and current coach . He has coached the English second division club Brentford FC since October 2018 .

Career

Thomas Frank played amateur football for Frederiksværk BK, but ended his career at a young age to become a youth coach at the club. From 1998 to 2004 he coached the Hvidovre IF juniors . After a year at B.93 Copenhagen , he moved on to Lyngby BK , where he stayed for two years.

Then he was hired by the Dansk Boldspil Union as head coach of the Danish U16 and U17 juniors . For the first time in eight years, he successfully led the U17s to the 2011 U17 European Championship in Serbia , where he was able to fall back on later senior national players like Pierre Emile Højbjerg or Yussuf Poulsen in the squad . This selection made it to the semi-finals of the competition, where it failed 2-0 to Germany. Under his leadership succeeded in the same year for the first time to qualify for the finals of the U17 World Cup , which this year in Colombia was held. There the Danes did not survive the group stage with just one point from three games. In July 2012 he took over the U19s , where his term of office ended after a short time after missing qualification for the 2013 U19 European Championship in Lithuania .

On June 10, 2013, the Danish first division club Brøndby IF presented Thomas Frank as the new head coach. In his first season 2013/14 as a trainer for a professional team, he was able to classify himself with the capital club in fourth place in the table. With the third place in the table, he also led the club in the following season 2014/15 in the ranks which were sufficient for participation in the qualification for the UEFA Europa League . He missed the leap into the group stage with the Drengene fra Vestegnen both times. On March 9, 2016, Frank resigned from his position after the association's manager Jan Bech Andersen had criticized him in an internet forum of Brøndby supporters under a pseudonym . At this time the club was in fifth place in the table

In his next job he went to England , where he was installed alongside Richard O'Kelly as assistant coach of Dean Smith at Brentford FC second division club and was given a two and a half year contract. With the Bees , he also took over the position of interface between the B-team and the first team, where he was supposed to ensure the optimal development of the players. In February 2018 he signed a new contract until summer 2020.

On October 16, 2018, Dean Smith left the London club to succeed the sacked Steve Bruce at league rivals Aston Villa . Thomas Frank was presented as his successor on the same day. But he had a difficult start in his new role, won only one of the first ten league games with Brentford and slipped into the relegation battle with the club at the turn of the year. Subsequently, however, they remained unbeaten for nine league games and stayed in mid-table until the end of the 2018/19 season . The season ended in 11th place in the table. After a mixed start into the following season 2019/20 , Frank won numerous league games with the Bees at the end of the year and advanced with the club in the promotion race. The young attackers Saïd Benrahma , Ollie Watkins and newcomer Bryan Mbeumo formed the BMW trio and made the club one of the most attacking teams in the league. After advancing into the play-offs with Brentford, Frank and his assistant coach Brian Riemer signed new three-and-a-half-year contracts in mid-January 2020.

Personal

Thomas Frank is married and has three children. He received his Bachelor in Sport from the Institute of Sports Medicine in Copenhagen in 1999 and studied sport psychology and coaching-based management at the same institute between 2002 and 2005 . In 2004 he was employed as a physical education teacher at a school in Ishøj . Before moving to London, he lived in Hvidovre .
