Oliver George "Ollie" Arthur Watkins (born December 30, 1995 in Torquay ) is an English football player who has been under contract with second division club Brentford since July 2017 . He is considered a flexible offensive player who can fill the position in the headquarters as well as on the wing sides .

Club career

Exeter City

Watkins joined the Exeter City youth team in 2004 after completing an unsuccessful trial at the club a year earlier. There he played successfully in various junior selections, including for the U18s, for which he scored 30 goals in the 2013/14 season and won the South West Conference in the Professional Development League. In April 2014 he signed his first professional contract with the Grecians , which tied him to the club for two years. His strong performance in the U18s was rewarded with the nomination in the first team's matchday squad for the last league game of the 2013/14 season in Football League Two . He made his debut in that 2-0 away win against Hartlepool United on May 3, 2014 when he came on for Matthew Gill in the 77th minute .

At the beginning of the next season 2014/15 , Watkins was often in the squad and came to two short appearances in the league. Watkins made his third and final appearance for Exeter this season on October 7 in a 3-1 away defeat by Coventry City . In this game he scored the only goal of his team and thus his first in his professional career. In December 2014, he joined the sixth-rate National League South club AFC Weston-super-Mare on loan for a month , together with teammate Matt Jay . The loan was later extended until the end of the season. With the Seagulls Watkins was an undisputed regular player since his arrival and scored ten goals in 25 league games.

After his return to Exeter City, he was initially ignored by coach Paul Tisdale . It was not until mid-October 2015 that he sat on the bench for the first time in the 1-0 away defeat against Carlisle United . On October 31 (16th matchday) he played his first league game of the 2015/16 season in the 2-0 away defeat against FC Barnet . Three weeks later he was on the grid for the first time in a 2-1 away win against Plymouth Argyle . As a result, it was used sporadically. On March 1, 2016 (34th matchday) he started the league game against Portsmouth FC for the third time this season and equalized the 1-1 final score in the 90th minute. For four days he made the only goal of the day against Cambridge United . As a result, he established himself as a regular player and scored his third goal of the season on March 19 (37th matchday) in a 4-1 away win against Notts County and prepared two more goals. His strong performance in March was rewarded with the Football League Young Player of the Month and PFA Fans' Player of the Month awards . Also in the next games he delivered strong performances in the Exeters jersey and collected eight goals and four assists by the end of the season, which he was able to achieve in 20 league games.

At the beginning of the next 2016/17 season , he could not continue the strong goal scoring of the previous season. In the first 15 league games, the now regular player scored only twice and provided two assists. His club also had a difficult start to the season and found itself in a relegation battle. On December 17, 2016 (21st matchday) Watkins reported back with a brace in a 2-0 home win against Mansfield Town . Two weeks later, he marked the first hat-trick of his professional career in a 4-1 away win against AFC Newport County . At that time, long-time coach Tisdale's squad had already been unbeaten for six league games. In the next three games he contributed one hit and five assists to three runaway victories and thus won the EFL League Two Player of the Month award . Exeter won nine of eleven games by February 2017 and thus advanced to the top of the table. Exeter finally reached the play-off games for promotion with 5th place in the table. In the 3-2 home win in the second leg of the semi-final against Carlisle United , he shot his club into the final with a brace. The final game at Wembley Stadium against Blackpool FC was then lost 2-1. Watkins finished the season with 15 goals and eleven assists in 48 league games. On April 9, he had already won the title of EFL Young Player of the Year and various higher-class clubs had become aware of the offensive player, so that staying at Exeter City seemed unlikely. Watkins finally left the club in July 2017 after 13 years of service. By this time he had played in 78 competitive games, in which he was able to collect 27 goals and 14 assists.

Brentford FC

On July 18, 2017, Ollie Watkins moved to second division club Brentford FC for a transfer fee of two million euros , where he signed a four-year contract with an option for another. He made his debut for the Bees on August 5, 2017 (1st matchday) in the 0-1 away defeat against Sheffield United . Just three days later, he scored for his new club for the first time in the 3-1 cup win against AFC Wimbledon . On September 23, he scored his first league goal in a 3-0 away win against Bolton Wanderers . He also netted once in the next two league games against Derby County and Middlesbrough FC . His first double in the championship was on February 20, 2018 in a 5-0 home win over Birmingham City . In this 2017/18 season he scored ten goals in 45 league games and prepared five more goals.

The 2018/19 season started Watkins with three goals in the first three league games. On September 15, 2018 (7th matchday), he took over the captain's armband for the first time in the league game against Wigan Athletic and led his team to a 2-0 home win. In the 5-2 home win against Blackburn Rovers on February 2, 2019 (30th matchday), he scored two goals and prepared another goal. Statistically, this season was similar to the previous year, because he scored again 10 times in the league, but increased with eight assists.

In the next 2019/20 season he scored four goals in the first six league games, including a brace against Derby County on matchday 6. On September 29, 2019, he scored the second triple of his career in a 3-1 away win against Barnsley FC .
