Rico Antonio Henry (born July 8, 1997 in Birmingham ) is an English football player who has been under contract with second division club Brentford since August 2016 . The left full-back represented his home country at U19 and U20 level.

Club career

Walsall FC

Rico Henry was born in the central English city of Birmingham and grew up as a supporter of the local club Birmingham City . At the age of eleven, he joined the youth department of FC Walsall , a club in the town of the same name in the West Midlands not far from his hometown. There he played in various ages and on April 30, 2014 he finally signed his first professional contract with the Saddlers . In the following season 2014/15 he was already permanently listed in the squad of the third division team . After sitting on the bench in two league games, the left full-back made his professional debut for the first team on 9 December 2014 when he won on penalties in the cup match against Tranmere Rovers . In the league he made his debut four days later in a 3-1 home win against FC Barnsley . The remaining season he was used by head coach Sean O'Driscoll as a substitute. The breakthrough as a regular player this season was prevented, among other things, by a shoulder injury, which put him out of action from February to April 2015. Nevertheless, in April 2015, he signed a new two-year contract. He ended the season with nine appearances in Football League One.

In the next 2015/16 season he was regularly used by O'Driscoll in the starting lineup. On September 29, 2015 (10th matchday) he scored his first league goal for Walsall in a 1-0 away win against Scunthorpe United . Due to his strong performance in September 2015, he received the Football League Young Player of the Month award . At the beginning of October 2015, a new three-year contract was signed. He did not lose his status as a regular this season. He completed 37 league games in which he was able to collect two goals and four assists. He was named to League One PFA Team of the Year and was nominated for Football League Young Player of the Year award.

On the 2nd match day of the 2016/17 season , in a 0-0 draw against Oldham Athletic , Henry injured himself again on the same shoulder as in spring 2015 and had to leave the pitch after half an hour of play. This was Henry's last appearance for FC Walsall before he left in August 2016. By then, he had played 48 league games and scored two goals.

Brentford FC

On August 31, 2016, Rico Henry moved to second division club Brentford . The club from the capital London paid a transfer fee of 1.5 million pounds for the full-back, which can be increased to over five million through bonus payments and provided him with a five-year contract. At his new club, he met his former coach Dean Smith , who coached him in Walsall's first team until his departure in November 2015. On September 8, 2016, he underwent shoulder surgery and had to take several months off. On February 21, 2017 (28th matchday) he made his debut in the 2-1 away win against Sheffield Wednesday for his new employer. Under Smith, he quickly established himself in the starting line-up until he injured his knee shortly before the end of the 2016/17 season and the season ended for him after 12 league appearances.

After a successful and injury-free preparation for the following 2017/18 season , he started again as a traditional left-back. On September 30, 2017 (11th matchday) Henry suffered another knee injury in the 2-2 draw against FC Middlesbrough , which this time was significantly more severe than the one in the spring. After eight league games, the season was over for him.

After over a year, Henry returned to training in October 2018. He made his comeback on November 24, 2018 (18th matchday) in a 2-1 home defeat against Middlesbrough FC . Under the new head coach Thomas Frank , he quickly established himself again in the starting lineup. On January 12, 2019 (27th matchday), he scored his first goal for the Bees in a 3-1 home win against Stoke City . His performance in January 2019 earned him a PFA Player of the Month nomination . A foot injury that Henry sustained in early February forced him to watch for two months. In this 2018/19 season he played 14 league games in which he scored one goal and two assists.

In the next 2019/20 season , Rico Henry became the undisputed regular player in left full defense and he did not miss a single league game in the first half of the season.

National team

On November 10, 2015, Rico Henry received his first nomination for the England U19 national team as part of the friendly international matches against the Netherlands and Japan . He made his debut in a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands. From November 2015 to June 2016 he was used in four games.

With the U20 he took part in the four-nation tournament in March 2017, was used in all three games and won this competition with the Three Lions . He was also in the selection squad for the 2017 U20 World Cup , but was removed from it due to his injury. He then did not play a game for the U20.
