David Raya Martin (born September 15, 1995 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish football goalkeeper . The goalkeeper has been under contract with the English second division club Brentford since July 2019 .

Career

In Barcelona -born goalkeeper David Raya began his football education at UE Cornellà before settling in July 2012 in the junior section of Blackburn Rovers moved. There he played regularly for the reserve team in Premier League 2 in the next 2013/14 season before signing his first professional contract on February 26, 2014.

On September 19, 2014, he moved on loan for four months to fifth division FC Southport , where he should gain his first experience in men's football. He made his debut on September 20, 2014 (11th matchday) in the 3-0 away defeat against Macclesfield Town . By early January 2015, Raya played 20 competitive appearances for the Sandgrounders before returning to Lancashire . There he played again in the U23 team for the time being. On April 4, 2015 (40th match day) he made his debut in the 3-0 away win against Leeds United in the first team of the second division . On April 30, 2015, he was given a new three-year contract. In the remaining 2014/15 season he came to another league assignment for the Rovers.

At the beginning of the next 2015/16 season he was trusted by head coach Gary Bowyer and started in goal. After five league games, of which not a single one could be won, the new acquisition Jason Steele ran out of him and Raya was only used in five Premier League 2 games in the remaining season. In the following season 2016/17 , which was catastrophic for the Rovers , Raya only got the chance in the last five league games in which he had to replace the injured Steele, but could not be relegated to the third-rate EFL League One despite good performances prevent.

After Jason Steele left the Rovers for Sunderland AFC in the summer of 2017 , David Raya rose to number one under new head coach Tony Mowbray in the 2017/18 season . On February 1, 2018, he signed a new three and a half year contract. Raya missed only one of the 46 league games this season and rose with the Blackburn Rovers as runner-up after a year back in the championship. In the next season 2018/19 he kept his regular place and played 41 league games.

On July 6, 2019, he moved to league rivals FC Brentford , where he signed a four-year contract. He made his debut on August 3, 2019 (1st matchday) in a 0-1 home defeat against Birmingham City . Head coach Thomas Frank relied on Raya as a regular goalkeeper in the 2019/20 season .
