The Te Papanui Conservation Park is a nature park in the region Otago on the South Island of New Zealand . The park is subordinate to the Department of Conservation .

geography

The Te Papanui Conservation Park is located in the Lammerlaw Range , about 50 km west-northwest from the center of Dunedin . The western part of Lake Mahnerangi is only 1 km south of the park and the Clutha River passes around 14 km to the west.

The Te Papanui Conservation Park covers an area of ​​21,000  hectares and extends in a north-south direction over a length of approx. 20 km. In the east-west direction, the park has a maximum width of 17 km. The headwaters of the Taieri River are located in the park.

history

The park opened in March 2003 and could be formed from existing nature reserves, land purchases by the Nature Heritage Fund and farmland that was not leased out.

Flora and fauna

The park consists of an extensive tussock grass landscape, the second that has been placed under protection after the Korowai / Torlesse Tussocklands Park .
