The Ruataniwha Conservation Park is a nature reserve in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand . The park is subordinate to the Department of Conservation .

geography

The Ruataniwha Conservation Park is located west of Lake Pukaki and north of Lake Ohau , in parts of the Ben Ohau Range , the Neumann range and the Barrier Range . The park is made up of 12 separate areas, with the area that extends over parts of the Ben Ohau Range with a length of around 31 km and a maximum width of around 14 km, by far the largest of all areas in the park represents. In summary, according to the Department of Conservation , the park covers an area of ​​over 36,800  hectares , whereas the former MP of the New Zealand Labor Party and assistant minister for nature conservation, Mahara Okeroa , put the area at over 37,000 hectares in 2006.

history

In mid-July 2006, the Ruataniwha Conservation Park was officially opened by Mahara Okeroa . Okeroa particularly referred to the name of the park, which in the Māori tradition has a history of over 400 years and is directly connected to the area around the park.
