The waipori river is a river in the region Otago on the South Island of New Zealand . It rises in the Lammerlaw Range and flows 50 kilometers in a south-easterly direction and crosses the SH 1 before it flows into the Taieri River at Henley .
In the upper reaches of the river is rugged hill country that is largely covered by Berwick Forest . Much of this area is in the Waipori Falls Scenic Reserve .
The lower reaches of the river passes through the wetlands around Lake Waihola and Lake Waipori , which both drain into the river. This area is home to numerous species of wading birds . The Sinclair Wetlands reserve is part of this area.
The name "Waipori" means "dark water" in the Māori language . The water has a dark color due to the peat bogs on the upper reaches.
Hydropower plants
A reservoir, Lake Mahinerangi, is located behind a dam at Waipori Falls . From 1907 this generated electricity for the city of Dunedin . It is also a fishing area.
In 1907 there was only a 3 meter high wooden weir, the water was then led to the power station in a 2.7 km long channel. Its two 1 MW generators were powered by Pelton turbines.
In total there are four dams with hydroelectric power stations with an annual output of 192 GWh in the 4 km long and up to 165 m deep gorge below the lake. The Waipori 1A Power Station supplies 10 MW, Waipori 2A 58 MW, Waipori 3 7.6 MW and Waipori 4 8 MW.
