Henley ( Māori Maitapapa ) is a small settlement in the urban area of Dunedin in the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The small town was probably named after the city of Henley-on-Thames in England .
geography
The settlement is located around 30 km southwest of Dunedin and 21 km northeast of Milton , on the eastern edge of the Taieri Plains . The Taieri River passes the settlement in the southwest. Towards the coast, which is around 7 km southeast, a hilly landscape separates the settlement from the sea. Southwest of Henley is Lake Waihola , one of the country's rowing centers. Henley is linked to other parts of the region by New Zealand State Highway 1 .
Henley has about 250 residents.
history
Henley used to be connected to the South Island Main Trunk Railway via a small train station .
economy
The main industry in Henley is determined by the dairy industry. The town had a cheese factory that later moved to the nearby village of Momona and was bought by the company that later called itself Mainland Cheese and is still a Fonterra brand today.
Attractions
In Henley there is a Presbyterian church and the Christian Brethren Church of New Zealand .
Flood hazard
The settlement is located in the flood hazard area of the Taieri River . In June 1980, floods occurred on both sides of State Highway 1 , which was located on a dam and reached as far as Dunedin Airport .
